The' street renaming was part of Cascade's millennial celebration. Cascade millennial celebration a huge success On May 5, Cascade Elementary School held a millennial celebration celebra-tion of major proportions. The festivities began at 1 p.m. when 200 North, the street that runs just north of the school, was given a new name, making Cas cade the latest in a long line of schools in Orem to name a street after the school or the school's mascot. "The city has made it so easy to do this," project head, Vicki Garbutt, of the Cascade PTA said. "Any school can name a street after itself, as long as it's reasonable. reason-able. The council passed a resolution reso-lution a couple of years ago that a school wanting to do a street name didn't have to go through a . lot of red tape and take the request re-quest to tha council. I remembered remem-bered reading that in the paper and decided that doing a street name would be a fun part of the millennium party." . So, the student council took suggestions from the student body as to what they would like to see the street named. The council narrowed the choices down to four, Cascade Boulevard, Cougar Drive, Cougar Avenue and Cougar Way. Cougar Drive was the big winner win-ner and Troy Carnesecca, public works technician for Orem City pu t up a total of five signs on 200 Assist individuals through the Crisis Line The Crisis Line of Utah County needs mature volunteers to answer hotline calls from people in crisis. It was a brand-new sign on the east side 850 East that the Cascade Cas-cade students got to cheer as a hole was made and the sign post was settled into the ground. The street naming was just a forerunner of the fun to come that evening, as more than 700 students and parents gathered back at the school for a picnic and dance that included the unveiling of the sixth-grade mural, the burying of a time capsule, a picnic pic-nic and a dance. "The mural is just incredible," Cascade Principal, Georgia Davis, said that afternoon, "The kids have worked so hard on it" The time capsule included items such as spotlights from each student and teacher, a photo of the school crossing guard, state coins in a special holder, copies of the city's millennial newspapers and other things. It will be opened in the year 2020. The picnic and dance were a huge success as parent and children chil-dren danced far into the night. 2000! t Bag, mulch and side discharge with tliis powerful 3-in-l. ran 6.5HP Briggs t Stratton Intek" OHv engine; electric start option Rapid Attach" system for 3-in-1 convertibility Best Built Smart Bag' grass fill indicator Three speeds, rar wheel drive Single point cutting height adjustment Die-cast aluminum deck 2-year Warranty 51 0mm w nmu www.countrygardaninc.ccm Country Garden, Inc 450 South 1325 West - Orem 224-4888 iiitoiiilli (USPS 411-700) Published Weekly by Utah Valley Publishing Company 601-225-1340 Fax 801-225-1341 538 South State Street, Orem, UT 84058 Subscription in advance per year $16.00 Out of State Subscription per year $35.00 Per Copy $.50 J Rachelle Bolingbroke heard of tne idea, sne jusi naa to iry u. The idea, one that Bob Larson of Shelley Elementary in American Ameri-can Fork has been bringing to life for several years, is to have fourth grade Utah history students stu-dents finish up their pioneer unit with an authentic handcart trek that helps them get a hands on feeling for what the pioneers who settled Utah went through. "Bob was such a help," Bolingbroke said. "I talked to him and got a lot of great ideas." She then, took those ideas and used some ideas of her own to create a wonderful day of pioneer fun and learning for her students stu-dents in early May. The students, complete with authentic costumes, large, heavy carts and a lot of determination, deter-mination, set off from the school shortly before 10 a.m. on a blustery blus-tery spring day and arrived at Strong Hollow, a lovely area tucked away just off 1600 North that is owned by Cherry Hill sixth grade teacher and "Mountain "Moun-tain Man," Scott Strong. At three check points along the rout, each group of hand carters were given "scenarios" that stated different problems that the pioneers in that cart had to solve in order to reach their destination. "We had three carts that each lost, three men to the Mormon Battalion. Another had an axle break and fell behind while trying try-ing to fix that, and in another cart, one of the people was 'run over' by the cart and had to come the rest "of the way on crutches-Bolingbroke crutches-Bolingbroke explained.
