Live your life as most people do and you will be forced to settle for what most people settle for. Charles Givens taken by an errant pop machine, then when he tries again, the dollar dol-lar bill he is using blows away in a sudden breeze. After he chases down his bill, he has less than encouraging en-couraging encounters with a dog, an irate car owner and a seagull before the delightfully surprising ending. The well-thought-out scrip, tight direction and seamless editing show that Southerland has a bright future in his chosen field of film making. "This is definitely what 1 want to do for my career," Southerland said. "I like to direct movies some day it would be nice to actually have a budget (both he and Andrus got a good chuckle out of that comment ). 1 enjoy all parts of film making, but I'd like to be the one who's directing direct-ing the whole thing." That sentiment is echoed by Southerland's classmate Andrew Stewart, a sophomore who's submission sub-mission to this year's contests, a commercial entitled ''Crumbless Cookies" won second place in that category at the High School festival festi-val and won an editing award at the UVSC contest. "I definitely plan to go into film or TV," Stewart said. "And I want to be a director. I want to be the boss, I can't stand to be told what to do." Both these young men are fortunate fortu-nate to be attending Orem High School, where, thanks to the dedication dedi-cation of Andrus, they have a superb su-perb video production program. Students in the class put together news videos for the announcements, announce-ments, do features for the school and put together the senior class graduation video as well as doing their own projects. "When we started the program, it was more of an academy than an actual class," Andrus said. "I was kind of the art director for in and we had four other teachers who were part of it. But they left and the school decided to give me the technical training so I could keep it going." That was four years ago, and Southerland and Stewart are just two of the many students happy for that turn of events. The two young men came into the program from different angles. Southerland found video by accident ac-cident starting out following his father's footsteps in graphic design. "My dad is a graphic designer for Zion's Bank and I always liked that, so I enrolled in the commercial art department here," he said. "But the video class was in the same room and I went over there, and enjoyed it, so I stayed with it." And proved very adept at it. As a junior, in his first year in the program, he took second place in video at UVSC with his documentary-style offering, "Multiple Intelligences." Intel-ligences." He also helped some of the seniors in the class put together the 1999 graduation film and is director di-rector and producer of this year's film. Stewart lowd the medium from the time he was a youngster. He was in Provo High School's multi media me-dia program before the family moved to Orem this year. It was a move that pleased Stewart as he found that Orem had a better program than Provo and he settled happily into the class. "When I got here, I saw the video productions class listed, so I talked to Mrs. Andrus and signed up," he recalled. Signed up and took off. His award winning commercial, "Crumbless Cookies" is actually just a small cut from a film he did with his cousin for Provo High School and, in his mind, it's not even his best work. "My favorite film is one I did entitled en-titled 'Trudy.'" he said. "It was a takeoff of the movie 'Rudy.' We went to film the soccer team once and they weren't there, so I just sat on the bench and talked like the guy did in 'Rudy'. Everybody who sees that one laughs." Unfortunately. "Trudy" didn't fit length-wise into any of the eight judged categories at the festivals, so "Crumbless Cookies" became the first of what Stewart hopes to be many ventures in a long profession. profes-sion. If you are interested in seeing one of Southerland's films, he will be debuting "Killer in the Orchard, his feature-length film at the Orem High Video Showcase tonight at 7 p.m. at the high school. Brandon Smith called to West Africa Brandon Jeffrey Smith, son of Jeff and Renee Smith, has been called to serve in the Ivory Coast Abidjan (West Africa) Mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and will enter the MTC on May 31. He will be speaking in sacrament sacra-ment meeting on May 14 at 9:00 a.m. at the Orem Park Eighth Ward Chapel, 100 South 400 West. There will be an open house for friends and family from 1-4 that day at his home, 463 West 300 South.
