Show Golden Living offers personal, professional care By Patricia Knoell Times Reporter To look around the beautiful beauti-ful Golden Living complex in Orem is to appreciate it The two main buildings, identical on the outside but set up differently on the inside, house the Level 1 and Level 2 care units. There is also the recently completed converted garage that holds five independent indepen-dent senior apartments. , However, as beautiful and comfortable as Golden Living is, the caring, professional staff may be the most impressive thing about the facility. Staff worker Katie Monroe shows some TLC to resident building at the Golden Living Center. mbvco PUZRTO VALLARTA 4- -AIR ONLY- -mom 7 NIGHT PACKAGE- SoacMimoaanm Cnnoor Preooadudtoorlcnaga) Ran) t rHa oorn SLC amoral Subad a Haanok a Wa or rtjavacn II- taia to Oww artta tern SIC Twain Ico"'--LIDmw'"- l ir" CARIBBEAN -II ' 7 DAY CRUISE m .- Ttnaaa ono aa n tmom I "We concentrate on making sure everyone receives the highest high-est quality of care," Nanette Lewis, owner and administrator administra-tor of Golden Living said. "We have a staff of about 32 people all together. Two of them are housekeepers and two are office workers, the rest is care staff. The emphasis here is really on the care staff." That emphasis shows in all aspects of the day-to-day life at Golden Living. At the Level 1 unit (reserved for those who need limited care, i much like home health care) there are many daily activities set up to' keep residents busy and happy. - - 1 " o d CANCUN AM ONLY- TOP SHOWS 25 DIFFERENT DEPARTURES Landonv .Pvpatn -AfimaaMaal TiMlnan2M -SawiMnghm FutaBorad InaHortudad item axlairaoiom ouch as Sr : 1ucfiAn(((Wjn.UnraiSataWl CarcrttX Booby Vvdoo and noa 95 6 NIGHT PACKAGE HddirlnEmnMCttotGofCmiK - ftnrttvdam canton SIC '1mm f, ALASKA EZS 7 DAY CRUISE , Omm 225-7600 $aMimoopaiur CruHora PnoHnckiooportcrarooi Roml Mp aitao Iran SLC il aoabana Tnavaa aa ttntm at oooaona Suorrt la oBbiy a una a mavaion TraaaiMiraiJaiiiiii "Our care coordinator, Shilo McEwen is absolutely wonderful," wonder-ful," Lewis said. "She works at least one-or-two days on the floor so she knows what's going go-ing on in the care situations, but then she has the job of setting set-ting up activities." The activities McEwen sets up axe myriad Everything from daily bus rides that could end in anything from a dish of ice cream to a trip to an arts festival, festi-val, a chance to learn about computers and the internet dubbed "senior surfing" and a new event called "Trying Time." "Even when we'd give them anonymous questionnaires question-naires to fill out, they still wouldn't tell us what changes they'd like. These senior citizens citi-zens were raised in a time when you didn't complain about anything any-thing and they really seem to be afraid that voicing dissatisfaction dissatis-faction might lead to expulsion from their new homes." So, McEwen implemented the new program. During this quiet time with just her and the friends they've made at Golden Living, she gets the residents to say, "I wish (this) was different." dif-ferent." That way they aren't saying they don't like something, some-thing, just that they wish it was different. " "Trying Time has been such a good thing," Lewis said. "Since we started to find out what the residents would like to see different and started applying ap-plying them, the family complaints com-plaints have fallen to almost nothing." There are three different levels lev-els of living available at Golden Living, Level 1 and Level 2 assisted as-sisted living and independent senior apartments. "Level 2 is for the more severe cases those who need medical care and more constant attention. Golden Living Liv-ing is one of the few facilities in Utah County to offer Level 2 assistance." " , The apartments, a new part of the facility, were just completed com-pleted last winter and provide home-like apartments for seniors se-niors who want to live on their own, but have a more controlled environment. The rooms are all comfortable comfort-able and there are many activities activi-ties available both on and off the campus of the complex. In Level 1, there is one care giver to about every 10 residents and in Level 2 the ratio is abou tone-to-seven, making sure that every resident has personal care. Lewis has been in the senior care industry since 1992 and owned three small homes in Salt Lake City before she had the opportunity to take over the Golden Living facility about two years ago. Already a Utah County resident and looking for a chance to manage a larger facility, the chance was too good to pass up and she's happy with her choice.
