"HinniMiiiiHiiimnMitu munnnrnn i rMnm. --unmiiini mJ 20, 1998 Darin Mills to receive Eagle Scouting's highest rank for young men, the Eagle rank, will be awarded to Darin Steven Mills, age 14, on Wednesday, May 27 at 7 p.m. in the Orem Utah Hillcrest Stake Center, located at 1450 South 800 East, Orem. Darin is the son of Paul and Virginia Vir-ginia Mills of Orem. During the ceremonies, guest speaker Steve Chindgren from Centerville will use his knowledge of live eagles to discuss Scouting's most prestigious pres-tigious award for boys. Only 2 of all Scouts in the United States earn the rank of Eagle. James Cottrell completes basic Sharon Marine Pvt. James M. Cottrell, son of Russell G. and Shirley A. Cottrell of Orem, recently completed com-pleted basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego. Cottrell successfully completed 12 weeks of training designed to challenge new Marine recruits both physically and mentally. Cottrell and fellow recruits began be-gan their training at 5 a.m., by running three miles and performing perform-ing calisthenics. In addition to the physical conditioning program, pro-gram, Cottrell spent numerous hours in classroom and field assignments as-signments which included learning learn-ing first aid, uniform regulations, combat water survival, marksmanship, marks-manship, hand-to-hand combat and assorted weapons training. ( They performed close order drill and operated as a small infantry unit during field training. Cottrell and other recruits also received instruction on the Marine Ma-rine Corps' core values-honor, courage and commitment, and Sharon Elementary students of the week are, back row (left to right): Jordan Williams Rebecca White, Sofia Espinoza, Leyah Reynolds, Aubrey Harrison, Ty Empey, Ross Downing. ' Darin earned 21 merit badges, taking him through the ranks of Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, and Life Scout. He has passed the necessary leadership leader-ship and character requirements imposed by the Scout Oath and Law, and directed a service project to build and paint small rocking chairs for the Children's Autistic Preschool, led by Dawn Armstrong, in American Fork. Darin is an Honor Student at Lakeridge Jr. High, a member of the Concert Band, and an active member of the L.D.S. Faith. He loves programming and working with the computer. Those wishing wish-ing to honor Darin on this special spe-cial occasion are cordially invited to attend. Cottrell and fellow recruits ended the training phase with The Crucible, a 54-hour team effort, ef-fort, problem solving evolution which culminated with an emotional emo-tional ceremony in which the recruits re-cruits were presented the Marine Corps Emblem, and were addressed ad-dressed as "Marines" for the first time since boot campo began. I f-'l,..-'': Page 6 til s mi f (i?t1 r k-' I DARIN MILLS Elementary 4th graders get to work planting flowers Busy students from Mrs. Lay's 4th grade at Sharon Elementary have adopted a plot of ground outside of their classroom. Students Stu-dents brought yard equipment, dirt, sand and rocks to the school to help with the beautification. They collected money to buy a flat, of purple violas to plant among the perennials that had been donated. Some students brought plants from home. Each day the garden is watered by hand and weeded by the students who have great pride in their work. Families of the students will sign up to do a weekly weeding weed-ing of the garden during the summer. sum-mer.
