Show Orem-Geneva Times Page 9 Wednesday, December 6, 1995 n n n n n For those making noiiday travel plans, Utah-based Morton Mor-ton International offers holiday driving tips gathered from experts ex-perts on safe driving techniques: Make Safety a Habit Don't drive until everyone in the vehicle is buckled up. The safest place for children to sit is in the back seat, securely strapped in a child safety seat. An infant in a rear-facing car seat should NEVER be placed in the front seat, especially especial-ly when the car is equipped with a passenger-side airbag. Children, as well as adults, should wear their lap and shoulder belts. A child riding in the front passenger seat should sit all the way back in the seat away from the dashboard. Children should never ride in the lap of an adult. Fatigue and preoccupation preoccupa-tion are major causes of high way disasters. Beat fatigue with: Frequent stops Stretch often Get fresh air and have a cold drink or a cup of coffee Allow extra time Plan for unforeseen events such as congested traffic or poor driving conditions Leave time to get there and back without hurrying or worrying. worry-ing. Drive smart Keep a safe distance from the car in front to give yourself time to react if necessary. Drive at safe speeds ap propriate to weather conditions. A general rule is to cut speeds by two-thirds when driving driv-ing on ice or snow. Ice reduces stopability as well as steering control. Don't drink and drive Arrange for a designated driver or alternate transportation transporta-tion ahead of time. Don't wait until your judg ment is impaired to make this decision; it may be your last. Be prepared Check current weather reports before starting your trip. Travel long distances with a companion whenever possible. Let someone else know your itinerary, including primary and alternate routes.
