Free brochure for parents, babysitters, and infant caregivers A coalition for Federal and private agencies including the U.S. Public Health Service and the March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation has launched "Back to Sleep." A national education campaign to teach parents to put healthy babies on their back or side to sleep in order to help reduce their risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SEDS). Nearly 6,000 infants in the United States die of SUDS each year, making this condition the major cause of death among babies between the ages of one month and one year. "Traditionally, American parents have placed their babies on their stomachs to sleep," says Jean Hatch, Director of Southern Utah's March of Dimes. "It is the goal of the campaign to reverse this practice and to have all healthy heal-thy babies sleeping on their back or side. This includes nap times as well as nightly sleep." The recommendation for healthy heal-thy newborns to sleep on their backs or sides was first made by the American Academy of Pediatrics in 1992. At that time, there were still some concerns about possible potential adverse effects from sleeping on the back, such as choking or an increase in cases of aspiration pneumonia. According to the campaign, Page 9 Oren-Geneva Times Wednesday, August 3, 1094 1 w " ? i Her husband graduated from Mountain View High School and Dixie College in St. George. Parents and infant caregivers should consult their doctor about which sleep position to use for these babies. U.S. Surgeon General M. Joycelyn Elders, M.D., a . pediatrician says, "The simple act ' of putting a baby to sleep on its back or side provides us with the most promising intervention we have ever had to reduce the number num-ber of babies who die of SIDS in the U.S." She says the "Back to Sleep" campaign hopes to reduce the number of babies who sleep face down from the current 45 percent to below 10 percent SIDS is defined as the sudden death of an infant under one year of age which remains unexplained unex-plained after a thorough case investigation. in-vestigation.
