The total value of all projects now under construction amounts to $27 million as of July 31. Funds For Forest Highways Apportioned Secretary of Commerce, Sinclair Weeks, has announced the apportionment appor-tionment to the states for improvement improve-ment of highways in and adjacent to national forests. Effective date for Utah's $1,095,914 allotment was August I. The state ranks I 0th in the amount received of the 42 eligible states and territories. Giant Shears Open Utah's First Interstate Project With a pair of giant scissors, Utah's Gov. George D. Clyde snipped snip-ped a red, white, and blue ribbon to open Utah's first Interstate project, pro-ject, the Beck Street overpass in North Salt Lake City. The event marked the official opening of the southbound section of the unit, the northbound section having been opened in 1955. UTAH HIGHWAY PROGRESS Commission Approves $39 Million Construction Program At its last meeting the Utah State 1 Road Commission approved an out lay of $39 million for future construction con-struction on state highways. The amount will cover work on 50 projects pro-jects scattered throughout the state. Funds will come from federal money mo-ney for the fiscal year commencing commenc-ing July I, 1959, however the money mo-ney is available now to be programmed. pro-grammed. It will be used with matching state money. There are still several projects to be advertised adver-tised with funds from the current year. The program provides for 16 projects on the interstate system costing $28 million; 14 projects for the primary system involving $6.6 million; 18 secondary projects a-mounting a-mounting to $3.1 million; and 2 urband jobs for $1.3 million. A Utah Booster A boost for Utah's economy is seen in work now going on for the state's highway system. Ellis L. Armstrong, director of highways, reports that during July the state had almost 1400 men employed by contractors engaged in construction work.
