Show Page 1 1 Orem-Geneva Times Thursday. May 30. 1991 Can't wait ti (At least that's the way I see it...) can enjoy old age, too Bv Maree McCown Special to Orem-Geneva Times Tired and worn, wearied by pressures and priorities, I'm counting the years 'til my energy returns, my enthusiasm blossoms, blos-soms, and 111 be young enough to be a "recycled teenager" at The Friendship Center in Orem. Obviously, Ob-viously, theyVe found the fountain foun-tain of youth. At least, that's the way I see it: That's when 111 be one of those people singingand dancingon the stage like they were when I called the other day. Or maybe 111 be downstairs quilting, doing ceramics, walking in the exercise room, lifting weights, or even bouncing balls off the pool table. (So, I need more practice before anyone will let me play!) At Least, HI be an expert in the gift shop. I spend dollars well. Especially when Ruby Maupin is in charge of all those handmade, creative, impressive treasures! The Friendship Center's the perfect name for the marvelous, warm, and caring members, for the spacious atmosphere, for the beautiful accommodations, tor the quality programs produced to enhance the lives of all the sensational sensa-tional seniors of our city. You know, a haven for hundreds whose "I-can-do-it" attitude of youth couples with their Tll-do-it-myself ' voice of experiences to make dreams happen. For example, they were lonely! lone-ly! Or was it hungry? Whatever, they needed a place to meet! To eat! To have fun! Hence, completion comple-tion of their building will be celebrated during an open house on Friday, June 14. Currently, the Center provides one meal per day for each citizen in attendance, and they usually serve at least 100 meals daily. On holidays, as many as 450 have been fed. Last December, I was honored as a member of the CDBG Commission Com-mission to be their guest for the most delicious steak dinner in the world. As hundreds of willing hands prepared and served the mouthwatering feast, it made me happy to think we'd played a Jim Daniels mans the coffee pot in the brand new kitchen and serving room at the Senior Friendship Center. Nearly 100 a day are served a well-balanced lunch at noon. Foster Grandparents... .Continued from Front Page Brown, Flora Mathews, Ruth Graham, Mary Cox, Eleanor Kinser, Vivian Smith, Donna Jenkins, Elna Laws, Clara Ciel-son, Ciel-son, Julinia Berkhimer, Janet Bird, Gertrude Bevan, Allie Car-don, Car-don, Gilbert Cook, Helen Dicker-son, Dicker-son, Lillian Sorensen and Gretchen Paulsen. Ten of the grandparents work with children in the Alpine School District, one in Youth Corrections, Correc-tions, two in the Detention Center, Cen-ter, eight in the Utah Valley Regional Medical Center, 26 in the Nebo School District, 23 in the Utah State Training School, 11 in the Provo School District, and seven at the Utah State Hospital. LOVE AND FRIENDSHIP In paying tribute to the many grandparents he has worked with over the years, Charles Dealing said, "I want you all to know I have always enjoyed the love and friendship we have had together over the years. I shall always remember the wonderful trips, summer picnics, and the Christmas parties. I will always cherish the stories you have told me about the children you have worked with. I want to let each one of you know that I have a special place in my heart for you." And I immediately began wondering how I could finagle another invitation. ..if Ernie and his master chefs were above flattery!" flat-tery!" Thinking of it, I realize, now, most of the Center's success is theirs. Because they knew such improvements qualified under federal guidelines for the use of these funds, they came to us with plans and proposals, estimated costs and projected goals in hand. Carl, Frank, June, and Berniece elaborated in support of each re- 3uest. It was total insight and edication that saw dreams become be-come reality and, ultimately, secured adequate room and equipment for the new dining room and kitchen. Taking action in other areas, members benefit from a nurse who is available every Tuesday from 8:30-12:30 to work with the Seniors on their health. This nurse travels to 11 Senibr Centers in Utah County and is paid from donations. Therefore, they are required to pay lab fees for tests administered or materials used. To have more and better low-income low-income housing remains a major concern. Twitchell has indicated several members would be happy to improve their surroundings. THEYVE DONE IT ALL AND AREN'T DONE YET Achievement seems to be their lifestyle. Like did you know that one of them was graduated from a high school in Switzerland at age 16? And that half of the 40 members polled had sought education beyond high school? And dare we forget the valedictorian valedic-torian in our midst? They were teachers, carpenters, homemakers, steelworkers, farmers, heavy-duty mechanic, bookkeepers, locksmiths, salesclerks. Helping her husband run a foundation for the handicapped hand-icapped and mentally retarded kept one wife busy. Other members mem-bers worked as a crane operator, a business broker, a coal miner, a beautician, a reporter. Awards, too, show diversity: trophies and plaques reward "most beautiful yard," drama, ' " muic, sports: Even a pool cha&V" pion! They represent service with the Red Cross, the Kiwanis Good-fellowship Good-fellowship and a Human Services Award. Volunteers were found in the CAP. Programs, the Rotary Club, American Legion, Eagles, Scouts and PTA. Military service, too, brought out patriotism as members served their country, earning a Good Conduct Medal and Bronze Star. We're proud of those who were Gray Ladies for ARC, who taught First Aid to Military Dependents De-pendents in Germany, who've given years of dedication to their church, who are temple workers and who pursue genealogy. Playing as hard as they work, they list interests at the Friendship Center as dancing, (one was specific and added "with the pretty girls") singing. Also, high priority was given to eating good meals and social contact. As soon as I am a member, I want to meet the member who gives comical and dialect readings, read-ings, who takes piano and accordion accor-dion lessons, and the one who plays the organ for "my own amazement." Looking back on the endless accomplishments of your past, I can hardly wait to share those of the future. For the wonderful things youVe made happen in Orem, take a bow. You deserve it ...and now if youll do just one more: Be sure to save me a place in the lunch line. The way I see it, The Friendship Center sounds a lot more challenging than a rocking rock-ing chair, and I'm bound to work up quite an appetite.
