Petersen, Peter-sen, is a series of moving, delightful delight-ful vignettes tracing the early history his-tory of Ferron, Emery County, Utah. Although the story focuses on the family of her late husband, Lorenzo Petersen, its appeal is universal. No stuffy Mormon family chronicle this. Its 174 Cages are rich in humor and uman foibles and interwoven with the stuff of real life. Ferron Creek was named in 1870 for a government man one Augustus David Ferron whose survey crew threw him into the water. After that, the government pretty much left the place alone. So did everyone else until 1875 ' when Brigham Young sent a little band of Danish saints to colonize the area. Soon afterward, when the Mormon prophet died, people conjectured con-jectured as to whether Brother Brigham had been called home for his reward or if perchance he was being chastised for having sent those poor folks to such an uninviting spot In her book, Petersen gives us glimpses into a pioneer dugout, at a time when even a log cabin was a luxury. We see women battling dirt, flies and devastating sickness. sick-ness. We see men performing 1 back-breaking labor to get a living off the land, and families growing up in material poverty and spiritual wealth. We gasp at the stoicism of the matriarch who, while she deals with a son's crippling illness and a husband facing amputation of his shattered leg, does not tell 3:15 m "Vibes" 3:30 GS "The Natural" 3:45 (8 "Nothing Sacred" 5:00 S8 "Ramona" anyone she's pregnant until the baby arrives. "Ferron Creek" is full of fascinating fas-cinating trivia as well. Women, for example, didn't wash their long hair in wintertime. Getting wet in cold weather was a sure invitation to pneumonia. And with all that oil on it, the hair was easier to manage anyway.
