Show Stance Summer Theatre opens "The Unsinkable MoUy Brown" GtmtontA Ghimimhi. rm a Sundance Summer Theatre an. nounces the opening of "The Unsinkable Un-sinkable Molly Brown" last Saturday, June 25. This popular Broadway musical features music and lyrics by Meredith Willson and book by Richard Morris. "The Unsinkable Molly Brown" is the true story of the heroic and humorous battles and victories of the indomitable lady from Hannibal, Missouri - Molly Tobin Brown. Lead-ville Lead-ville Johnny Brown is the man who falls in love with her and gives Molly her first dream-a shiny brass bed-as bed-as well as several fortunes, and a gold cigar-band wedding ring. The score includes songs like "I Ain't Down Yet," and "Colorado, My Home." The beautiful mountain setting of Sun Utah Symphony to perform It will be a nieht for thp ladies when pop conductor Newton Wayland comes to Orem July 7 to conduct the Utah Symphony in the SCERA Shell amphitheater-but men should be interested in-terested as well when the respected orchestra presents "Woman in Song," a tribute to women via music. The 8:30 p.m. concert is being sponsored by a grant from Geneva Steel, and tickets are available either at the SCERA Showhouse or at the gate. Admission is four dollars for adults and $.50 for children. The music will unfold with a variety of styles as varied as "Bess You is My Woman Now" from "Porgy and Bess" and "Sophisticated Ladies," a Duke Ellington medley. Also performing will be Irene and Christie Peery, award-winning Utah pianists. "Utah is rich in the heritage of manufacturing, as well as agriculture," she added. The State Fair director wants to promote modern and innovative products pro-ducts and services from Utah, including in-cluding heavy equipment, high tech products, and clothing. This team was responsible for last year's highly successful production of "Annie" at Sundance. Metten, a professor pro-fessor of Theatre and Cinematic Arts at Brigham Young University, has most recently directed "The Rainmaker" Rain-maker" in the Pardoe Theatre. He is also the director of the Hill Cumorah Pageant for the LDS Church. Mr. Debenham has recently returned from a tour of South America with the BYU Dancers' Company of which he is artistic director. Debenham is also a member of Contemporary Danceworks, a Utah modern dance company. Wayland, a conductorcomposerarrangerpianist, conductorcom-poserarrangerpianist, went to the Boston Symphony Orchestra after attending at-tending Harvard and graduating from the New England Conservatory of Music. He became the orchestra's pianist and harpsichordist and later arranger and pianist for Arthur Fieldler at the Boston Pops. He is the principal pops conductor for both the Denver and Houston symphonies and is conductor of the Midwest Pops Orchestra. He records for Pro-Arts records and has three current releases on that label. Guitar stolen A resident of Village Apartments at 1600 S. 350 E., Orem, reported the theft of a guitar from his apartment Saturday sometime before 4 am. The owner told officers someone entered an open door and took the guitar which was propped next to him when he fell asleep on the couch. The State Fair runs from September 8-18 this years. Frazier has announced announc-ed his retirement from the Alpine t School District, effective this month. At present he serves as the Maintenance Coordinator for the district. Frazier came to the Alpine District in 1972 to work in the Maintenance Department. Before that time, he was Chief of Security for the University Mall in Orem. Prior to that position, he worked as a district supervisor of the 7-11 stores in Utah County. Frazier has been retired from the U.S. Air Force since 1969. There he received the Distinguished Flying - Cross, the Air Medal, and the Bronze Star. His enlistment included service in both Korea and Vietnam where he served as a gunner engineer and later as an Air Fields Supervisor. Dr. Harold Jacklin, Administrator Ad-ministrator of Facilities for the Alpine District, praised Frazier's work during dur-ing his 16 years with the district: "I have called on Don for hundreds of assignments during those years," he said, "many times in the middle of the night. Each task has been met with professionalism and enthusiasm. We will miss Don here in the district : his leadership, his ability to deal with people, and his maintenance skills." Don and his wife Elma reside in the Pleasant Grove area. They plan to make full use of their retirement in order to travel. Performances this month will range from a Japanese opera singer to an Army band and from a Danish men's chorus to a clarinet soloist. The International Summer Vocal School was established to give American singers the opportunity to audition for and receive vocal training train-ing from world-renowned musicians. According to local Pacific Inter-cultural Inter-cultural Exchange (PIE) Area Representative Lucille Starr, the students, all between the ages of 15 and 19, will be here for an eight-week program. They will be taking daily English language classes at Orem High School and participating with their host families in many activities. The students bring their own spending money, are fully insured, and are anxious to share their cultural experiences ex-periences with their new American families. PIE is a non-profit educational organization that brings students into in-to the United States from 16 countries to live with American families for programs ranging between three weeks and a full academic year. Pacific Intercultural Exchange staff bring student files to prospective host families for an informal interview inter-view and match students and families according to many lifestyle variables. Interested volunteer families may contact the United Way volunteer Center at 374-8108. Other community volunteer opportunities include: , English-as-a-Second Language program - volunteers willing to spend one or two hours each week in the evenings helping a refugee learn English.
