Hickman, former dean of the College of Family, Home and Social Sciences at Brigham Young University, has been named director of the BYU Jerusalem Center for Near Eastern Studies for the 1988-89 academic year. President Jeffrey R. Holland said Hickman replaces David B. Galbraith, who is taking professional development leave after having been involved with BYU's Study Abroad programs in Israel for the past 20 years. Holland also announced that George A. Horton Jr., former chairman chair-man of BYU's Ancient Scripture Department, has been appointed associate director of the center. "We are delighted that a man of Martin Hickman's academic and administrative ad-ministrative abilities has accepted this challenging position," Holland said. "He and George Horton form an excellent management team, together with others already in place, to handle the affairs of our new center." Holland praised Galbraith for his long and distinguished career in developing BYU's Study Abroad programs pro-grams in Israel and, more recently, for his role in dealing with the challenges connected with construction construc-tion of BYU's new center on Mount Scopus. A milestone for the project was reached May 18 when BYU signed a 49-year renewable land lease with the Jerusalem District Lands Authority. "David Galbraith's professional development leave is, after 20 years of service in Jerusalem, very well deserved," Holland said. Hickman joined BYU's political science faculty in 1967 and shortly thereafter became dean of the College of Social Sciences. In 1979, he assumed assum-ed the deanship of the newly formed College of Family, Home and Social Sciences, where he served until returning retur-ning to full-time teaching and research in 1985. He was BYU's senior dean, having hav-ing served 17 years in that position. Hickman's career includes tenure with the U.S. Department of OPEN MON.-SAT. STARTS 9:30 ADULTS $3.
