At Murray- f r i: . 4 ; i (ilSM0 JC - -4 S Todd Gentry, Mountain View, goes up for two points against Pleasant Grove's Gregg Bahr. By Aaron Campbell The Mountain View basketball team played their first game of the '8M6 season last Tuesday night. They played against the Box Elder Bees in their own gym. Joel Gardner, a math teacher at the high school, is also the basketball coach. He was busy picking the team two weeks ago. "The decisions were tough but I think I've done my best to choose a good team." This is what Gardner said concerning the week of tryouts. There is a new rule in high school basketball this year. It states that the coach may not get off the bench unless he calls a time out. I asked Gardner about the rule, he smiled and said, "I guess that means I have to yell louder." The starters for Box Elder game were Todd Gentry, Chris Cooper, Marc Pollard, Gary Cameron and Greg Hatch. The Bee's played a good game against Bear River the Friday before Mt. View's game. "They didn't shoot well from the free throw line but they did get hot from the outside," said Gardner. The first quarter was Todd Gentry's Gen-try's and Chris Cooper's game. Out of the 14 points scored in the first quarter, Gentry scored 6 and Cooper, 4. Gentry was the first to score. He took a rebound pass from Chris Cooper. The last basket in the first quarter was shot by Greg Hatch in the final seconds. The score at the end of the first quarter was 14-8. Marc Pollard brought the score up to 20 with his excellent rebound skills. Cooper scored 2 points which ended the first half 22-15. Gentry also did well. Following the half-time show, he came out with 6 points. He was fouled on 2 lay-ups. He got 3 points on free throws. At the end of the third quarter, the score was 37-25. The Bruins kept far ahead of Box Elder during the fourth quarter. The final score was 52-45. Gardner said, "The coordination and movement was good but they shot too quick and didn't set up." Friday's game was more dramatic than the Box Elder game. Mt. View played the Pleasant Grove Vikings. The first period was going smoothly until Gentry got the ball stolen from him and Mt. View was behind 8-10 at the start of the second quarter. Mt View began to slip behind because of fouls that they committed. Gary Cameron held his ground and kept the Bruins in the running. By the end of the half, Mt. View had fallen 9 points behind. Mt. View committed 9 fouls and this resulted in Tigers Win Opener By Rich Gibbons The Golden Tigers opened their basketball season by handing the Jordan Jor-dan High Beetdiggers their second loss of the season, beating them 6448. Senior Doug Larsen, 67", controlled con-trolled the tip for the Tigers to open the game. Mike Peterson opened the scoring for the Tigers with a foul shot . to give the Tigers their first point of the game and season. Jordan High's Murray took charge and scored Jordan's first 6 points, but not after the Tigers had scored 7 points of their own. The Tigers then jumped out to a 9-6 lead with 3:55 left in the first period. The Tiger's defense played tough and they allowed the Beetdiggers Beetdig-gers to score 2 more points in the first period. Ben Bradshaw ended the first period, scoring a lay up with no time left on the clock to give the Tigers a 20-8 lead. The Tigers did not forget how to play defense when they opened the 2nd period. The Tiger's defense showed show-ed Jordan that what goes up, sometimes comes down rather quickly. quick-ly. Between twin towers Erin Johnson and Doug Larsen there was not going to be a lot of baskets scored inside. Because of the rebounding and agressive play on both offense and defense, the score at the end of the first half was 35-14 for the Tigers, j "I felt like the kids played with a lot of intensity on both offense and defense," said head coach Dick Belliston. "They worked hard on getting get-ting the offensive boards and moving the ball to the open man." ' The Beetdiggers didn't exactly shower the score board with points to open the second half. The intense defense of the Tigers forced Jordan to turn the ball over twice within the first minute. Mike Peterson also opened open-ed the scoring in the 2nd half for the Tigers hitting two more foul shots!(; Swimmers from Orem scored a long-awaited victory over Cottonwood Heights and Murray at the Murray Thanksgiving Invitational Swim Meet held November27,29and30.
