The Lord of the rings, Gunther Gebel-Williams headlines circus Gunther Gebel-Williams, the Lord of the Rings, brings a new triumph of wild animal training to the Salt Palace in the 113th Edition of Ringling Bros, and Barnum & Bailey Circus, coming Sept. 28 for an engagement through Oct. 3. The charismatic German trainer circles the rings riding Roman post-style post-style astride a pair of perfectly matched black Morgans, with a lion riding on the back of each horse. Gunther demonstrates his credentials as the world's greatest animal trainer in several spotlighted appearances in the show. He turns 20 lethal Bengal tigers into a pack of playful pussycats, jumping through hoops and rolling over at his commands. Although he makes the great cats seem almost tame, Gunther has accumulated over 500 stitches in his body and has had his hands bitten through dozens of times, scars received not from attacks, but in the process of breaking up fights between animals. Yet, the three-time winner of the Ernst Renke Award - one of the Circus World's highest honors - is undaunted by perils he faces each time he enters the confines of the cage. Gebel-Williams is the ultimate boss of a herd of 21 powerful, elephants, and utilizing his will and voice alone, commands them through a series of maneuvers that , includes balancing on tubs, building elepKaht pyramics, and an im-" pressive pachyderm headstand. Stallions are not commonly used in the American circus because they are difficult to train and handle, but Gunther prefers to work with them. "Stallions are more spirited," he says. "They make a very exciting show." Gunther recognizes each animal in his menagerie is an individual and has an uncanny rapport with all his charges. A consumate showman, he expends as much energy behind-the-scenes as he does in the arena; personally feeding, cleaning and attending to the needs of his vast collection of animals. He credits the relationship he has with his animals outside the ring as being the key to his success inside the cage. His unique communion with animals of almost every species is unparalleled in circus history. Gunther every day performs per-forms the kinds of feats live that are usually reserved for the pages of fiction or the movie screen.
