M$i ,a Brother Brigham would be pleased with the way BYU Evening Classes has sewed people in all walks of life for over 100 years. The first evening students were workers at the Provo Woolen Mills back in 1876, one year before the death of the great pioneer and colonizer. The mill workers wanted to learn, but like most everyone else in those pioneer days, they had to struggle from dawn to dark to survive in this rugged country. They asked Dr. Karl G. Maeser, principal of the Brigham Young Academy, if his staff would be willing to teach them in the evening. Today, the department offers over 600 different classes after 4 pjn., providing the opportunity for a college education to many people with special needs those who are employed during the day, housewives, retired people, and single parents, as well as college students who want to expand their schedules into the evening. w....
