' ! 1 If I'f;S1 1 - Devon Ogden introduces the girls basketball state championship team in the awards assembly on Monday; Both the boys and girls teams won the gold trophies. Mountain View High School Awarded Two Gold Trophies In Assemblies Monday Monday morning the auditorium at Mountain View High School was packed with students, parents, civic and education officials and media people and guests from Provo High School. Perhaps it was the most unique awards assembly ever held in Orem. It was unique for two reasons. First it was a combined presentation of the state 3A boys and girls basketball trophies for first place. Second, it was the first time a first place trophy has been awarded in the City of Orem to a boys high school basketball varsity team. Provo students presented a cake to the coach and team. On it was written, "See you at State in 83". Mayor Squires of Orem made brief remarks about the city's pride in Mountain View. Mr. Adams representing the Alpine school board made some comments before Coach Freestone introduced the girls state champs. Denice Burnett and Steph Worthington spoke briefly as did Keri Contant's father. Mr. Giles presented No. 1 pins and certificates to each of the players. Co-captains Alan Pollard and Kreg Harrison represented the boys team. Matt Brown's mother and Gary Cooper's father shared their feelings about being "basketball parents." Coach Gardner hit "all the bases" as he expressed gratitude for everyone associated with Mountain View athletics. He talked about the ."ghosts ; of the past" from previous Orem and Mountain View teams who had laid the foundation for this years state championship. He cautioned his players and the student body to keep the victory in perspective and live like champions in all aspects of their lives. He said, this victory means most to me because it will make us a better high school, better people and better human beings." Those associated with the Bruin varsity each received a No. 1 pin and certificate from the high school administration. It was a great gesture and hopefully will become a t. Jition at M.V. Principal Price and Mrs. Dillenback of the PTA unveiled the new flag for M.V. It was deep scarlet with a gold lettering and white fringe. The co-captains of the boys and girls teams presented the trophies to Mr. Price and the assembly concluded as numerous students and others stood with teary eyes and lumps in their throat, while Bobby Birds band played the school song. It was very inspirational and a fitting climax to Mountain View's conquest of the gold. We congratulate both the girls and boys teams for their outstanding accomplishments this year. ,-i - j ( V- ' , " Heroics by Alan Pollard in the last 8 seconds kept Mountain Views state championship hopes alive for 2 more days. Byron Vaetoe's offensive rebound and score tying shots with 26 seconds left in the game set the stage for the controversial heroics of Alan. South called time out to set up the last shot by the games leading scorer - Mark Duran with 24 points, only problem was they forgot to include Alan in on the plan. With :08 seconds left Duran took the shot, but Alan blocked the ball to Matt Brown who dribbled down court to set up the last shot. Alan missed it from underneath but got his own rebound and put it in as the buzzer sounded. The referee was in perfect position to see the shot and the red light on the backboard, he had no hesitation in his call as he signaled the shot good. The South coaches protested as the crowd stood stunned by the dramatic finish. The call stood and the Bruins were in the state semifinals for the second time in their two year history. The game was a close One all the way with M.V. leading 14 to 11 and 28 to 24 in the first half action. South took the lead with 2:45 in the 3rd quarter as Carl Pollard went out with four fouls and Mark Duran scored 8 points for the cubs. The South team went into a stall and had a 35 to 32 lead to end the 3rd quarter. The cubs lead by 5 at 39 to 34 at the 6:30 minute mark. Two turnovers by South and shots by Byron Vaetoe and Alan Pollard closed the gap to 40 to 39 with 2 minutes remaining. Carl fouled on a blocked shot and left the game with 5 fouls. Alan later was fouled to make the score 43 to 41 and set up the last baskets by Byron and himself. Duran scored 24 of his team's 43 points and put on an excellent shooting display, unfortunately his two turnovers and missed shots in the last minutes detracted from a brillant performance. The Bruins were led by Byron Vaetoe who kept the Bruins in the lead during the 2nd quarter when he had 9 of his team's 14 points. The Pollard brothers each had 10. The cubs did an excellent job of taking away the inside play of the Bruins and caused them to do things differently than they had been accustomed to doing all year. Coach Gardner's bench did an excellent job on defense. Gregg Clegg and Kreg Harrison are to be commended for their play in a very close game packed with pressure. Defensively they were super. V7 Gary Cooper takes advantage of Carl Pollard's screen and puts in two of his 17 points in the state championship game on Saturday. Expression of Provo player is indicative of outcome, "What happened." The Bruins left the T-Birds in the dust as they streaked to a 64-41 victory. In the 3:10 game on Friday the Bruins played every man on the team as they gave the T-Birds lessons on how to cherry pick, slam dunk, block shots and fast break. Timpview went over three minutes without scoring in the 3rd period while Matt Brown, and Gary Cooper stole the ball and Bruins fast breaks made the score 34 to 20. Timpview started to full court press and the Bruins responded in kind. The third quarter was the fastest action I've seen this year, the hustle and play was superb. Cooper scored 9 points to ignite the Bruins blow out. L Matt Brown scores two for M.V. as Gary Cooper gets in position for possible rebound. Paul Frampton from Provo misses a blocked shot attempt in last Saturday's state final. u ;; - ; h ' - v -; i J For bowling, golf, boiketball, baseball, football any port or event. Here they lead a yell during a time out. The rebounding and outlet passing Carl Pollard played his best ball of the ot tne brums front line coupled with year as ne iook control unaerneatn Gary Cooper, Matt Brown and Kreg Harrison's fast break streaks simply were awesome in this semifinal game. The Timpview team must of felt like they had backed into a buzz saw When the Bruins started to run on them. Numerous points came off the full court press of Timpview as long passes continually found the T-Birds out of defensive position and cherry picking was in season! The first quarter should of ended 12 to 8, but a lay-up by Matt Brown, a tip in by Alan and a cherry pick by Kreg Harrison all in the last minute made the score 18 to 8. The second quarter was marked by numerous fouls on both teams with Carl Pollard getting 3rd and Chase from T.V. getting his 4th. Timpviews trapping defense slowed the Bruins but only momentarily as they moved to a 28 to 20 half time lea H" both baskets. The 3rd period ended 47 to 38 as Carl took an inbounds pass, bent lor, wheeled around two defensive players and put it in for 2 of his 20 points. Fourth quarter action saw Carl block 2 shots, lead the fast break, score 10 points and snare 5 rebounds before he left the game. Coach Gardner played every player on the bench as his team completely dominated the final quarter both defensively and offensively. Leading scorers in the semi final game were Carl Pollard 20 points, 14 in the 2nd half, Gary Cooper 16, 8 were off the fast break and cherry picks, Alan Pollard 11, Byron Vaetoe 7, Matt Brown 6, Erick McAllister 2, Kreg Harrison 2. Coach Gardner was especially pleased with the defense and the rebounding of Alan and Carl. tr I prp Wf 9 1!
