Show MR. CRAWFORD Winston M. Crawford was presented the second annual Arthur V. Watkins Outstanding Citizen Award at a banquet held at Osmond Studio Friday, Sept. 19, 1980. Max Curtis was Master of Ceremonies Cere-monies for the program which included a fine dinner, a vocal solo by Miss Orem, Michelle Allen, and - a Trumpet Trio by the Brunson Burners. Orem Chamber of Commerce President Richard Hillam presented the Outstanding Citizen Award. Before presenting the award, Hillam explained that the committee that decides the winner of the Arthur V. Watkins Award consists of all past presidents presi-dents of the Orem Chamber Cham-ber of Commerce. It was a very difficult decision to pick an outstanding citizen because of the high caliber of people in the community. Hillam went on to explain some of Mr. Crawford's accomplishments. accom-plishments. Winston Merriam Crawford was born Oct. 15, 1911 in Manti. While attending high school and Snow College he was active in dramatics, music, school government, govern-ment, and athletics. As a District Leader and Mission Secretary in the East Central States Mission, Win had rich experiences. On Nov. 6, 1937, he married Ramona Mellor. He was asked to be the Deputy Sanpete County Recorder. In 1940 the State Director for Vocational Education asked him to be one of their local directors. His job was to direct the training of 500 women in the operation of power sewing machines to make parachutes for the Parachute Para-chute Company of Utah. In 1942, the family moved to Salt Lake City where Win had accepted the position of Supervisory Training Specialist for the Utah State Department Depart-ment of Public Instruction. Instruc-tion. During the next six years he set up and conducted con-ducted supervisory training train-ing programs in war related industries throughout Utah and the west. It was after assisting assist-ing Geneva Steel Company Com-pany with one of these programs that he was offered the position of Asst. Supervisor of Training, Train-ing, later becoming General Supervisor, which position he held until he retired in Oct. 1976 after 28 years of service. Win was active r in the American Society for Training and Development, an International Inter-national Training Organization Or-ganization with over 10,000 members. Because of the position he held and the hours of service, the Torch Award for outstanding out-standing service to humanity and a Life Membership were awarded to him by the society. He served on the Orem City Council when Luzell Robbins was Mayor. This was shortly after Win moved to Orem. State Orem 225-1340 County, and City activities continuously: four years on the City Council, three years as President of the Orem Chamber of Commerce and six years as Mayor. He helped organize the United Way of Utah County and the Utah Valley Industrial Development Association. He was appointed by Governor Calvin Rampton and served two terms on the Peace Officers Standards & Training Council. He served four years as Chairman of the Utah State Apprenticeship Council. In 1974 the Utah County Commission asked him to serve on the Utah County Government Govern-ment Study Commission and the Utah County Youth Home Advisory Committee. Presently Win is President of Orem Booster's, Inc., and on the Board of Trustees of the Orem Community Hospital. Presently he is a High Priest instructor, and he and Ramona teach the Young Adults and the Temple Preparation Prepa-ration classes for the Orem 13th Ward. Win and Ramona are the parents of four boys and two girls with 15 grandchildren. J |
