Show Orem Wins Nate Long Track Meet With two weeks remaining before the state 4A track championship, champion-ship, the Golden Tigers are solidifying their position as favorites to win their second consecutive con-secutive title. "We have had two weeks of hard training and many of our team members were running tired," Bill Delaney said. Even so, there were many outstanding performances per-formances as both boys and girls won the Nate Long track meet. The boys easily outdistanced out-distanced host Skyline by a 119 - 73 margin and the girls squeezed by Olympus 94 -90. John Bestor led the assault on the record book as he cracked his own state record for the second week in a row. His 15-feet-6-inches jump earned him the meet's most valuable performer trophy. Matt Johansen and Richard Allen broke senior class and school records. Johansen broke the 300 IH record with a time of 37.80. His winning time of 14.20 in the 110 m HH was only .1 second off of the record held by Jim Fralick. Allen won both the discus and shot put. His toss in the SP of 56-11 bettered bet-tered the senior class record of 56-4V4 held by Paul Liston set in 1975 and Allen's own school record of 56-7 set in 1979. Soph. Jim Turner broke the sophomore LJ record of 21-7 held by Matt Johansen. Turner's 21-8 was good for tie for 5th place in the meet. Juniors Melody Jones and Julie Waters were part of two record breaking performances each. Jones and Waters teamed with Julie Jones and Shelly Roberts to win the 400 meter relay event and establish a new srhnnl rprnrrt nf 50.20. M. Jones won the 200 m dash in record breaking time of 25.88. Orem easily won the girls section of the meet, scoring 74 points to 55 for runner-up Provo. Olympus Olym-pus was third with 53, followed by Carbon with 51 and Weber 31. "We were running on six of our eight cylinders," cylin-ders," Delaney said. Orem only won five events but placed seven others among the top six finishers finish-ers to run away with the team title over 29 other schools and finish ahead of runner-up Ben Lomand by nearly a double margin. mar-gin. The Scots had 54 points, while Murry was third with 39 and Provo claimed fourth with 35 points. The best individual performance in the meet was turned in by Orem's John Bestor. "This is a tremendous performance by John," Coach Delaney said. ;"John was over 15-7 but when you consider that he had to mark his steps at 9 : 30 and do his warming up, and then doesn't take his first try until 10 to four in the afternoon, that is some kind of an ath-"lete." ath-"lete." "letters Defeat ECearns 5-0; Close Season Against Bingham, Brighton Orem High's tennis team, after defeating Kearns 5-0 last Friday, has a chance to tie for first place in Region Two dual meets if they can whip Bingham tomorrow and Brighton next Tuesday. Tues-day. The netters travel to Bingham for a 3 p.m. contest tomorrow, then host second ranked Brighton here at 3 p.m. Tuesday to close the dual match season. Coach Steve Baugh believes the team can win the last two matches and become co-champions. They defeated Bingham handily in the first round, but their only loss of the season was a 5-0 trimming by Brighton. Three of those matches could easily have gone Orem's way. And that's what the coach is counting on the second time around - winning win-ning three close ones in the first and second doubles and in the third singles. "Orem is definitely capable of upsetting the Bengals," he said. "And we'd like nothing more than to do this in our last dual meet of the , ear and the last one with Brighton, since Orem goes 3-A next year."
