Mangum and the City Council last Tuesday to receive a champion's welcome home: "We have with us a national hero," announced Mayor Mangum. As Curt and his wife Bonnie approached ap-proached the Council, Mayor Mangum added, "Behind every great man, there's a woman - three steps ahead of him." And as Curt spoke of the exciting challenges of the past few weeks, he too gave credit to his wife: "She gave me a lot of moral support . . . and made sure I had my carbohydrates that morning." (In Boston) A double amputee and a diabetic, Brinkman told of his victory in Massachusetts. Not only did he break all Boston Marathon records, but he beat them by more than half an hour -exceeding his own expectations. Luck? Not when one considers the hours of hard training ... the scars he carries on his arms to remind him of the hard "push" to the finish line . . . nor when he tells of "a little extra support sup-port from his Father in Heaven." He expressed appreciation for the support of local people, for encouragement en-couragement from Orem and County friends. A special thanks was given to Mayor Mangum and Councilman Earl Farnworth, who met him at the airport on his victorious return. "It was good to see friendly faces," he said. As he held the plaque presented to him by Orem City for his outstanding achievement, Curt spoke of continued "dedication and devotion to his goals and ideals:" The Days of '47 Marathon is soon coming to Salt Lake . . . and the Para-lympics are scheduled in Hollard this summer. His dreams are aimed in those directions. A former employee of Handicapped Awareness, Curt has been a part-time employee of Orem City, working in the Recreation Department since last February.
