Orem Streets which were designated as the official route for the Walk-A-Thon, were filled with hikers most of the cool, windy day. State-Orem (Orem State Bank Building) Ph. 225-2442 Students To Participate In Trek Some BrighamYoung University Univer-sity students will experience real Mormon pioneering March 30. The Associated Students of Brigham Young University are sponsoring "Handcarts '74 an actual trek through mountains with handcarts, capturing some of the flavor of the Mormon handcart expeditions of 125 years ago. Mormon handcart pioneers walked the plains from Iowa City, Iowa, to the Salt Lake Valley. The 3-month trip on foot was actually faster than by wagon train, and much less expensive, considering the cost of wagons, animals, and animal feed. Tragedy overtook two handcart companies in 1856 when an early winter caught about a thousand in the open, and 200 perished. Each group participating in the BYU event purchases an $8 tickets, which will be exchanged ex-changed at the trek site for a pre-cut handcart kit. Each group must provide two front bicycle wheels to complete the handcart, which was designed by Glen L. Enke, professor of civil engineering at BYU. The event will begin at 9 a.m. in Provo with an hour's ride to the assembly site, about 35 miles south of Provo, and a few miles southwest of Goshen. Utah. At the site, the participants partici-pants have two hours to assemble assem-ble the kits into carts. Everyone Every-one is invited to wear dress in style of the handcart era. A period of four hours is allowed for the circular trek over the mountain trail, and a msp will be provided.
