' Annual Scout Merit Badge Pow-Wow Set For BYU More than 1,500 Boy Scouts are expected to attend the annual Scout Merit Badge Pow-Wow scheduled to be held on the campuses cam-puses of BYU and Utah Technical College at Provo Nov. 3, 10. and 17. ' ' The general assembly each week is set for 8:45 a.m. with class work beginning at 10:00 a.m. Forty-nine different merit badge offerings from animal industry in-dustry - beef production to woodwork wood-work will be offered to those of scouting age. The program is organized for all scouts eleven years of age and older, and Instruction is. ISADO. Participants will work on each merit badge selected for 50 minutes each Saturday during the Pow-Wow. Exceptions are swimming, lifesaving, and small b boat sailing. Before the Pow-Wow, the scout should purchase and study the three merit badge pamphlets approved ap-proved on the registration acknowledgement ac-knowledgement slip he receives in the mail prior to the event. The registration fee for the three-day event is $4. per boy and includes an attractive Pow-Wow Pow-Wow patch. Sponsoring organizations this year include Brigham Young University, Uni-versity, Utah National Parks Council, Utah Technical College of Provo, and various community organizations. Last year, about 1,400 scouts earned 1,679 merit badges in subjects from electronics to swimming. And the idea that they fould only one tree in the valley is pure myth, according to a Brigham Young University geographer. ge-ographer. 'The Pioneers were actually quite pleased with conditions in the valley, said Dr. Richard H, Jackson, BYU assistant professor pro-fessor of geography. "They found many trees growing along streams east of the Jordan River, and there was grass as tall as yt:y!?!;'Hjx?wr. Orem their horses.' Dr. Jackson has studied 135 diaries and many other historical documents to assess environmental environ-mental conditions in Utah during the mid-1800's. He will report, his findings today as guest speaker speak-er in the American West Lecture Series sponsored by the Charles Redd Center for WesternStudies. The public is invited to the free presentation at 8 p.m. in 104 A Jesse Knight Building on the BYU campus. Dr. Jackson is a native of Payson, Utah. He obtained his bachelor's and master's degrees de-grees at BYU and his doctor's degree at Clark University in Worcester, Mass. His dissertation disser-tation was titled, "Myth and Reality: The Mormon Perception of the Environment." . .ii; Geneva Times Advertising Pi IIC nitf i rlnnrlnl New Process For Obtaining Oil, Gas From Shale Tried CLEVELAND, Ohio Private financing of a $7.5 million program pro-gram to test a new process for extracting oil and gas from oil shale neared completion today with the signing ofSunOiland consortium represented by Webb 'Resources, Inc., of Denver, Den-ver, Colorado. Sun, a major petroleum company, com-pany, has pioneered in the development of tar sands. Webb is ' one of the most active, Independent exdoration com panies in the Rocky Mountain area. The two brought to 12 the number of companies participating partici-pating at $500,000 each for a total of $6 million. Three more companies are expected to join soon to complete the planned 15-company venture. Webb Resources, an oil and gas firm, is representing a group investing $500,000 in the program as a unitW ebb, Gary Operating Co. and Jerry Cham bers Oil Producer, all of Denver. Den-ver. Preparatory work already is underway on the scheduled 30-month 30-month project to test a process and hardware invented by Para-ho Para-ho Development Corp. of Denver. The program will be conducted at the Anvil Points oil shale facilities of the Bureau of Mines near Rifle, Colorado leased from the federal government. The Paraho process has been in successful commercial use for several years in the calcination cal-cination of limestone.
