WASHINGTON - The Forest Service has added another 35,000 acres of Utah forest land to a wilderness study which began last January, Sen.WallaceB.Bennett, R-Utah, said today. This more than doubles the original 295,000 acres of roadless road-less forest land in the state being studied for possible wilderness wilder-ness designation, the Utah Republican said. The Forest Service said it was increasing the study area throughout the U.S. in response to public comment "and other faCSen?'Bennett said the studies "40 acres in the Tushar will not be completed until after Mt, Thousand Lake Mt. and F sh- Noted speakers will cover topics dealing with layouts; weekly columns; developing successful advertising and public relations, etc. This is to be a session for reviewing, sharing, and learning new skills and techniques in various fields. BYU Offers New Course For Students A new 'work while you learn" program, giving students opportunity op-portunity to earn while gaining valuable on-the-job training in fields related to theirmajors, is being developed by Brlgham Young University's College oJ Engineering Sciences andTech-nology. andTech-nology. Under the program, which began last spring, students spend every other semester after their freshman yearwork-ing yearwork-ing full time for a private engineering engin-eering firm or government agency. The new setup not only helps students financially but shortens short-ens the time required to become fully productive following graduation, grad-uation, according to Dr. Armin J. Hill, dean of the College of Engineering Sciences and Technology. Tech-nology. Many students graduate with a good foundation of technical knowledge, but some are woefully woe-fully lacking In understanding of Industrial practices and techniques tech-niques Dean Hill said. This deficiency is being corrected cor-rected under the new program because students are brought in close contact with professional profess-ional personnel and technical operations under 'real world competitive situations, he explained. Dr. Cliff S. Barton, BYU professor of civil engineering and college coordinator of student stu-dent work programs, said business, bus-iness, industry and gobernment agencies throughout the country axe cooperating to provide the much needed work experience for students. 'Not only does a student have the chance to earn most if not t all of his educational expense, but he increases in efficiency and is more motivated in school, and gets better grades," Dr. Barton stated. "He asks meaningful mean-ingful questions and there is a higher level of communication because he relates his academic work directly to the practical experiences he receives at wsrk." Dr. Barton pointed out that BYU's new calendar with three semesters in each school year is ideal for the new "sandwich : program" where school and 'work are alternated. "It is possible for a student to accumulate a full year of employment and still graduate with a bachelor's degree within four years of his high school graduation," Dr. Barton explained. ex-plained. "Or, if a student wants to spend a little more time before graduation, he can gain two full years of work experience exper-ience and the required eight semesters of credit in four and two-thirds years." About 15 students have participated par-ticipated in the program so far, working with such companies as Bechtel Corporation, Sun-strand, Sun-strand, 3M, Caterpillar and Megadiamond, he said. The new program has been successfully adopted by schools across the nation and in England, Eng-land, and many companies are starting to hire students directly dir-ectly out of their cooperative education - work programs. Graduates who stay with the companies they worked for as students usually have accrued benefits and start at higher1 salaries, Dr. Barton stated. The "work shile you learn" program also is a great motivator mot-ivator in career planning. A student has the change to ex-student ex-student has the chance to explore ex-plore different facets of engineering en-gineering and technology outside out-side of the calssroom," Dr. Ba: ton said. Students learn to handle responsibility res-ponsibility In their jobs and in some cases, they can earn col-legecredit col-legecredit forork projects.
