Bailar Jr., noted chemistry professor from University Uni-versity of IUinois, will address the Central Utah Section of the American Chemical Society Thursday (Oct. 4) at 8 p.m. in Room 247 Martin Building at Brigham Young University. The public is invited to attend at-tend the meeting, saidDr.Byron Wilson, chairman of the section. sec-tion. "Research on the Borderline Border-line of Inorganic and Organic Chemistry" will be the subject of Dr. Bailar's lecture. Dr. Bailar received the B.A. and M.A. degrees at University of Colorado and the PhJ3. in 1928 at the University of Michigan. He has been at the University of Illinois since 1928, and also has served as a consultant for industry and government. He has published over 230 chemical articles and three textbooks, and has served on the editorial boards of ten professional pro-fessional journals. Elected president of the American Chemical Society in 1959, he has been honored as recipient of two medals from the Society and awards from the Chemical Society of New South Wales, the Swiss Chemical Society, Manufacturing Chemists Chem-ists Association, and honorary doctorates from Colorado, Buffalo, and Lehigh Universities, , .,., .,-,'WlMto,Zm MOTHER'S Have Your Little Tots BIRTHDAY PARTY at Candy's No. I 207 SOUTH State, Ph. 225-9835 Between Hours 2-5 daily Ice Cream - Cake - Drink j CANDY'S NO. 1 "1 HOUSEWIFE SPECIAL j COUPON REDEEMABLE FOR IT ON CHEF SALAD OR I DC SUPER SUNDAE Between Hours 1:00 to 4:00 daily OrtnhAi Named Fnr PTA Sharon PTA Membership Enrollment Orcm -Geneva Times October 4, 1973 Gives Tea Party The Child You Help May Be Your Own". He urged all citizens of Utah to give their wholehearted support to the Utah Congress of Parents and Teachers. The Proclamation in part reads: To increase membership mem-bership and activity which will secure for every child the highest high-est advantages in physical, mental, social and spiritual education. According to Mrs. McKay Rawlings, chairman of the membership committee, the goal for the year is 100,000 members. This is an increase of 16,000 members over last year. Mrs. Calvin L. BYU Professors Working On Coal Mine Fire Proble Three BYU professors working work-ing on coal-mire fire prevention have found that the finer the dust of the extinguishing agent the more effective it is in squelching squelch-ing fires. Dr. Ralph L. Coates, Dr. L, Douglas SmootandDr.M.Duane Horton, all professors in chemical chem-ical engineering, are now starting start-ing their second year of research re-search for the U.S. Bureau of Mines to 'find out how material such as baking soda works to extinguish coal mine fires," Dr. Coates said. One effective fire extinguish er they have found is a commercial com-mercial product called Purple K which not only cools the flame but it also acts as an inhibitor to the chemical reaction of fire. The UJS. Bureau of Mines is now developing a system of coal mine fire prevention. Included In-cluded in the prevention system will be an improved fire extinguishing ex-tinguishing procedure. Dr. Coates said the research team would like to develop a fire extinguisher which would be more efficient and also require re-quire less chemical than needed now. ms Dr.Coates said the conditions oi a coal mine are simulated in a laboratory. Different mixtures mix-tures of coal dust, methane and chemical extinguishants are placed in a burner and the rate the mixture burns is measured. Another means of research employed by the professors is a computer model of flames. The predictions of the computer model coupled with experimental experi-mental results help the researchers deduce the chemical properties used to reduce the flames, Dr. Coates said. GUI?
