Fuel Earnings Down For Fiscal Year Earnings of Mountain Fuel Supply Company and subsidiary for the first six months of 1972 and for the 12-month period ending June 30, 1972, were lower than earnings for the comparable periods a year ago, it was reported Wednesday by M. M. Fidlar, president. For the first six months of 1972, earnings applicable to. common stock were$5,196,630, or $2.05 a share, compared with restated earnings of $6,184,969, or $2.44 a share for the same period in 1971. For the 12 months ending June 30, 1972, earnings for common were $7,032,954, or p2.77 a share, compared with restated earnings of $8,480,355, or $3.34 a share for '.he 12 months ending June 30, 1971. (Earnings were restated due to lie acquisition of Interstate Brick "ompany on April 21, 1971.) Mr. Fidlar said that lower earnings are the result of warmer weather, which cut down the demand tor natural gas during the heating season, and increasing . costs. Although the Companywas granted rate relief in both Utah ind Wyoming to offset higher prices of gas supplies and to accelerate its exploration pro-prrm pro-prrm to find new gas reserves, the effective date of the rate relief in Utah could not be made until mid-May of 1972, well after the higher revenue heating season. Appeals are presently pending in both Utah and Wyoming to modify or revoke the recent actions taken by the respective Public Service Commissions granting the Company rate relief, but the Company is hopeful the Commission orders will be sustained, sus-tained, Mr. Fidlar said. Mexcan Scientists Abroad Return As Opportunities Open in Mexco MEXICO CITY -Mexican scientists who had left their country ten years ago to work abroad are now returning home because President Luis Echeverria has instituted a multi-million dollar program which is providing new opportunities op-portunities for scientific research. The reverse in the brain drain is the achievement of the National Council of Science and Technology, created by President Echeverria in 1971, to promote scientific research re-search and to develop new technologies to meet the needs of Mexico's developing economy. The Council has already invested more than $5 mil-1 lion in new research programs pro-grams at universities and institutes throughout Mexico. Mex-ico. Among the first to return were several distinguished nuclear scientists who had been on the faculties of universities in the United States. "We are extremely pleased that these men are returning to Mexico," one Government official said, "because we do not have enough scientists to meet our present needs. With their return, we will not have to wait five years while new scientists are trained." 'These men are being drawn to Mexico by new research re-search projects which the National Council of Science and Technology is funding in the fields of medicine, engineering, geology and oceanography. At the School of Medicine at the University Univer-sity of Nuevo Leon, a pro ject is under way to train scientific and technical faculty in pharmacology and toxicology.
