Fuel Reports Earnings Increase SALT LAKE CITY A combination com-bination of favorable factors enabled Mountain Fuel Supply Company to increase its earnings earn-ings substantially in both the first quarter of 1969 and the 12-month period ending March 31, 1969, it was reported Monday Mon-day by M. M. Fidlar, president of the natural gas utility. He said the favorable factors included a rate Increase in Utah that became effective September p, 1968, colder weather, and a full year of operations since settlement of the nationwide copper cop-per strike which affected one of the Company's larger industrial customers as well as other industries in-dustries in the Company's service serv-ice area. Earnings for the first three months of 1969 were $3,611,967, or $1.48 a share on 2,450,320 shares outstanding for the period, per-iod, compared with $2,168,414 (restated), or $.90 a share on 2,407,776 shares outstanding for the same period in 1968. For the 12 months ended March 31, 1969,' earnings were $7,045,629, o r $2.88 a share on 2,44,695 average aver-age number of shares outstanding for the period, compared with the restated earnings of $4,525,725, or $1.88 a share on 2,407,776 shares outstanding for the 12 months ended March 31, 1968. (Earnings for both 1967 and 1968 were restated to reflect flow through to earnings of investment in-vestment tax credits permitted by an order of the Public Service Serv-ice Commission of Utah. The differences in the number of shares outstanding is accounted for by an issue of 42,544 shares made by the Company on June 14, 1968, to the shareholders of Wasatch Chemical Company in exchange for their stock in that company.) Mr. Fidlar said the increase in earnings should be viewed in proper perspective because of the favorable factors involved. "Our first quarter in 1969 was one of higher rates, colder weather, and full industrial activity and all these factors combined to increase in-crease our earnings by a substantial sub-stantial amount," he said. , 'The new Utah rates were restructured to provide increased in-creased rates in the winter rate months from .November through May and decreased rates in the summer rate months from June through October, he continued. The new rates went into effect on September 1, 1968. Thus the earnings for the 12 months ended March 3 1, 1969, reflect the major part of the 1968-69 , winter at the higher winter rates but bnly two months at the lower summer rates. However, in the calendar year 1969 we will experience the full effect of all five summer rate months, at rates that are lower than ever before, and seven months of the new higher winter rates. This fact should be kept in mind when estimating out earnings earn-ings for the Ml year 1969 by comparison with those for the 12-month period endedMarch31, 1969. Should the investment tax credit be eliminated, earnings will be further affected. NaturaUy, we are pleased with the substantial upward trend of our earnings which reverses a decline we had experienced in re cent year. We expect to have a good year.' Mountain Fuel Supply Company is an investor-owned natural gas utility that distributes gas in Utah and southwestern Wyoming. The Company also engages in certain nonutility operations, namely the production and sale of oil and phosphate rock, and through a subsidiary, Wasatch Chemical Company, the manufacture manu-facture and sale of industrial chemicals and agricultural fertilizers ferti-lizers and insecticides.
