RACISM IS NOT ALL WITH THE . NEGROES So much these days is charged ' back and forth that people are - racists. Famous baseball player Jackie Robinson, the first Negro to break the color barrier in that professional sport, said on Aug. 12 that he will resign from Gov. Nelson A. Rockfeller's staff to support the Democrats in November Nov-ember because he says Richard M. Nixon has 'sold himself out . to the bigots in the South R obinson denounced the Repub-, Repub-, lican ticket of Nixon and Gov. , Spiro T. Agnew (a Greek) of , Maryland as 'racist in a New York television interview Sun day, Aug. 11. Robinson, a long-time liberal Republican who said some nasty things about Senator Goldwater in the 1964 elections, apparently 'was peeved at Gov. Agnew because be-cause he called into his office and chewed out some Negro leaders after the Baltimore riots following the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King. Throughout the campaign, the liberal press has seen that George C. Wallace has been labeled a racist. This, appar ently, has even made him work harder to show people that he is not. And when people find out that they have been lied to by the press the seeds of mistrust germinate quickly into full-grown foilage. Another area of racism has plagued the mcvie and television screens since World War II. But more noticeably later is the lack of subtly in portraying racism in the raw. This writer recently saw the movie "Anzio which was distributed dis-tributed by Columbia Picutes. Despite the heroics of the American Ameri-can fighting men, the movie is a deliberate racist smear against the Germans along with very strong message that young men should be pacifists because war is so useless and terrible. Granted, war is terrible, but sometimes it is the price to pay for freedom. And basically, that is man's desireno matter where he lives on this spinning ball. Facts brougnt out in the Nueremberg trials indicate that less than two million people died in Germany--people of allraces-because allraces-because of political differences and of cholera. And cholera was the cause of death of many hundreds of thousands whose IT J I 1- Tmw i i in. I, -- jf.f i 0 a a a a STANDARD BUILDERS D SUPPLY CO. a b o a Ready Mixed Concrete Driveways. Most pictures of the piles of emaciated bodies in Germany draw world-wide sympathy. And rightly so. But when the pictures are used for propaganda purposes- -saying that these people died of starvation, not by cholera-this cholera-this is racism in the raw. Germany today is America's best ally bar none. And what will the Germans think of America' when they see the new movie on the market, 'Dart of the Sun.'? In 'Dark of the Sun, one of the mercenaries is a German. He, of course, hates Negroes and finally murders kindly, good natured Jimmy Brown. This is to much for Rod Taylor vho takes the law into his own hands and slaughters the German. Sex-pot Sex-pot Yvette Mimieux stands by Taylor who is tried for the crime and testifies that he was justified justi-fied in killing the '"orutal" German. Ger-man. At a key point in the movie Anzio," an American Ranger (a 'Green Beret" of World War II) was captured by the Germans. They looked into his wallet, found a picture of the soldier's baby, and threw it away. This caused the soldier to struggle to get it back, so the Germans pumped several bullets into him at close range. All of this points out that when one speaks of racism, don't think that it just belongs to the black and white! I'm sure I speak for all citizens of Orem who have had occasion to use the ambulance service operated by both reserve and regular officers of the Orem Police Department. I have had a need for the ambulance on numerous occasions occa-sions and the. efficiency of the ambulance crews has saved my life five or six times. These officers also show the utmost courtesy and kindness in the operation of the service. And the best part about this ambulance service is the fact that it is offered free of charge to the citizens of Orem. ; I understand the Orem Police Department currently is holding hold-ing a fund-drive to raise the money necessary to purchase a new ambulance. I wholeheartedly urge the citizens cit-izens of Orem to -support this fund drive to the fullest extent. I know what an efficiently run ambulance service can mean to a person in time of need or emergency. Again I would like to offer a heartfelt "thank you" to the wonderful men who serve as Orem Ambulance Service crews. Frank N. Smith . 487 N. 50 E. 1 Orem Councilman Comments.. Government is a business. In the case of the Federal Government Gov-ernment this business is very big business! Unlike other businesses however, government does not make a profit on the services it renders. In fact, the Federal Government ends each year deeply in the red. For any other business this would be disasterous, and short lived. But the Federal Government goes merrily along, each year with larger and larger deficits and seemingly, with no fear of going out of business. How come? Well obviously there must exist a different set of rules. Lets examine that difference and see how the matter pertains to Federal Fed-eral Assistance and Federal Grants and similar Federal Programs Pro-grams of interest to all of us. First of all we need to realize rea-lize that government has no income in-come in the usual sense. Almost Al-most all of its revenue is derived de-rived through taxation. Most of us, in managing the money air. fairs of our families must let our income control our spending. spend-ing. Not so with the Government. Govern-ment. If it over spends because of ever increasing programs and services, it simply raises taxes to provide the additional income. If our city government decides we need a new Water Treatment Treat-ment Plant, or a City Center, or whatever, and if it is necessary neces-sary to borrow to finance the additional expensethe proposition proposi-tion must be submitted to the voters for approval. Should the proposition fail the project is killed. Not so with the Federal Government. The only yoke we (each of us individually) have in any proposition to expend huge sums for great new" programs (financed with our tax money) is the vote we cast for those who vote on these matters. I SUBMIT SUB-MIT THAT VERY FEW OF THE PRESENT SOCIAL AND WELFARE WEL-FARE PROGRAMS CURRENTLY ESPOUSED BY THE ADMINISTRATION ADMINIS-TRATION WOULD EVER GET OFF THE GROUND IF ITWERE NECESSARY TO SUBMIT THEM TO A VOTE FROM THE ELECTORATE ELECT-ORATE OF THIS GREAT NATION! NA-TION! . Most politicians soon learn that you don't make many friends be asking people to sacrifice a little rather you please them when you give them something-even something-even if they haven't asked for it and really don't need it. Since a politicians life's blood depends upon votes from pleased people-there people-there has been and will continue to be, a parade of programs Orem-O'neva Times wmch promise to do all things for all people. Every new program costs money-and must be budgeted for. The budget is compiled by combining the budget requests from all the various departments and agencies of government. Therefore, the more programs, the greater the expenses. EXPENSES EX-PENSES ARE PAID FROM TAX REVENUES!! It is plain to see then, that in government, just as in our own households, we must let our tastes and our appetites be tempered by the size of our income. in-come. Sometimes we are forced to forego some of the little nice things of life - in order to stay solvent. We must realize that if we are to stop the increase in-crease in taxation we must learn to deny ourselves a little. We will need to inform our elected officials to stop killing us with kindness. We must accept ac-cept the plain fact that we have a choice- we may keep demanding demand-ing more and more services (and ever increasing taxes will Thursday, August 22, l'JGB result), or we may tighten our belts a little and learn to live within our nu ans.
