COMMUNIST -SPONSORED STRIKE GETS 1 MILLION STUDENTS TO HELP IN USA Anyone who believes that there is no "internal threat by the Communist Party in the United States is either a complete fool or a liar. He could even be both. The U.S. Reds are boasting that 1 million students-high school and college-walked out of their classes to join in the International Interna-tional Student Strike against war and racism. These strikes came under two left-wing banners; namely, the Students foraDemocraticSociety called the strike 'Ten Days to Shake the Empire"; the Student Mobilization Committee (toEndi the War in Vietnam) called the strike "Ten Days of International Action Against the Vietnam War. The twin climax came came on April 26 when these 1 million radical lefties walked out of classes. At New York's Columbia University, Univ-ersity, 1,000 policemen had to be used to suppress a student rebellion that had closed the school for a week. News early this week indicated that classes for the remainder of the year were cancelled. Students would get a 'pass or fail' grade and could make arrangements with the professors to take final exams. More than 27,000 students attend that university. In New York City alone, a total of 37 12 percent of the pity high school students were absent April 26--that's 100,000 students. Coupled with college students in the city, the New York Times estimated that 200,000 high school and college students were absent that day. : Students walked out on their education that dav from 282 hirti v schools and colleges, according to Linda Morse, coordinator for the strike and executive secretary secret-ary of the Student Mobilization Committee. . Foreign participation came from students in Prague, Tokyo Paris, Mexico City, and other international leftist hot spots. Building up to this climactic week were many activities of student 'militancy in the UJS. Last week, 50 students on Brooklyn campus of Long Island University took over the office of the university provost (a topi administrative official) .They were members of the Student Organization for Black Unity. A, sit-in at the admissions office on April 12 by some 300 black and white students at Tufts University (MedfordMass.) Disrupted Dis-rupted the school; they got what they demanded. At University of Michigan, 150 black students on April 9 occupied the administration building for five hours, demanding that a scholarship and professorship honoring the late Dr. Martin Luther Lu-ther King. They got their demands. de-mands. A take-over of the administration administra-tion building at Colgate University Univers-ity (Hamilton, N.Y.) by some 550 students and 40 faculty members who held it from April 10 to 15 protested racial discrimination discrimina-tion by a campus fraternity. That fraternity's charter was revoked. A federal judge ordered 54 students reinstated at Tuskegeee Institute (Montgomery, Ala.) aft-: er the group had been expelled for holding the president and 11 trustees captive for 13 hours while the students demanded more say in policies at the predominantly pre-dominantly black school. At Cornell University (Ithaca,; N. Y.), 30 black students protestedi "racial slurs" by an economics instructor, after which the university univ-ersity agreed to investigate the complaint. Meanwhile, 1,200 students stu-dents signed . a petition demanding demand-ing the university's president resign re-sign from the board of directors direct-ors of Chase Manhattan Bank which, besides having affiliation affilia-tion in South Africa, is under in-vestigaton in-vestigaton for discrimination in its New York City offices. So I'll just say that all the "Don Carlos's in the LDS Church were named for someone who was named for the beloved brother of Joseph Smith and Hyrum. Don Carlos Smith died of a broken heart, as much as anything. The story of the Smith Family is one of unbelievable tragedy. Of Orem-Geneva Times Thursday, May 9, 1968 course there wereand are--those who say it served , them right. I don't hold with this. Tragedy is tragedy, no matter. Selah. (Washington, D.C.) was closed i because black students demanded more voice in campus decisionmaking. decision-making. Half of the 22,000 students at the University of Arizona (Tucson) (Tuc-son) participated in the April 26 strike. At Wayne State (Detroit) (De-troit) 3,000 students walked out and were joined by 2,5000 high school students. In addition, students demonstrated demon-strated at Boston State College against the firing of an assistant professor; at the University of Georgia over campus rules which "discriminate against women; at Olympic Community College in Bremerton, Wash., over the expulsion ex-pulsion of the student presidentelect; president-elect; at Bowie State College, Maryland (70)over school building build-ing conditions; and at Virginia Union University in Richmond, over campus academic requirements require-ments and behavior rules. Only an alert and fearless administration, ad-ministration, supported by students stu-dents really interested in a college col-lege education, can avoid a snowballing snow-balling disaster in the American education scene. Right spang-dang on the front page of ye Orem Geneva Times it says and I quote: 'Vacating of Streets in Old Townsite Draws Blast from Citizens and unquote. This sounds like me. Not knowing what is being talked about it still sounds like me and I feel less lonely because of it. Word has reached me that someone wants to know why I'm against quote again, 'EVERYTHING 'EVERY-THING and unquote. If anyone says I'm against EVERYTHING, it is a base canard. Look that one up, Dearie. It just may come in handy. So, I repeat: I'm NOT against everything. I go all out any old time for home and mother. So, there! But that's about all I'll go out for, the way things are. Sitting looking out of the Drug Store window supping sumptuously sumptu-ously on custard pie and a cup of guess what, I have full view of the traffic THING they have contrived for Provo, my home town. The new freeway from south brings the tourists, we'll say since half the population is trying to encourage them while the other half looks on in horrer. So, Tourist swoops up over the overpass on south University and there in breathtaking glory is V Timpanogos. When Tourist recovers re-covers his breath, he sees, not far ahead, downtown Provo City So, traveling too fast, he arrives at Center and University and what now? Pandemonium. He is confronted con-fronted by a sign saying that he must go somewhere else unless he is going to shop. GOING TO SHOP? Try and do it. One hour. Can you find a clerk in one hour? Just suppose sup-pose you had in mind stopping to eat. You're a stranger. Where to go? Can you find a place to eat and eat in an hour? Let me tell you, that pain that you think is an ulcer, IS! But supposing you are smart enough NOT to want to stop in such a wonderland. Just supposing suppos-ing all you want is OUT! You: have already passed First South, though, being a stranger, you don't know First South from the SanteFe Trail, nor First North either and, since the traffic flow still flows, you go on north up University Ave., and if you can keep your senses, sooner or later you'll arrive at the mouth of Provo Canyon. If you are wise, you'll pull off to the side for a moment of meditation. (Meditation (Medi-tation is very good this year.) Now, you can turn left in to Orem, and perhaps find a Shangri-la of sorts, or you can turn right and get to Salt Lake City by wayofPark City, which is more fun anyhow. My point is, don't be playing play-ing fast and loose with the streets of Orem's Old Townsite, whatever THAT is, until you KNOW what you're doing. Was going to say something about my cousinDonCarlos Clayton Clay-ton at the time of his death. Even had hopes, for a time, of attending at-tending his funeral. When that was made too difficult, being out of Provo, I thought perhaps I Happiness is better steaks, apple pies and baked potatoes for he-man appetites.
