Show 1w M u t I a fyyuth Louise Portridge by Rath Louise Partridge The first thing I do these mornings, morn-ings, is scrape up the courage to look out my front windows and check on the condition of my magnolia bush, now in full, glorious bloom. Today it is still burgeoning. Will it survive tonight? to-night? Of course I have other blossoms that are in peril, but the magnolia represents them all. The late snow last year broke it down badly, but what there is of it is a beautiful sight indeed. At the moment. I'm going to Salt Lake this afternoon. I'll only be away a matter mat-ter of hours, but I get to California Cali-fornia about as often as Salt Lake City and I'm so surprised, that I look out the window more than I tend to my business here at the typewriter. I see interesting things. Three robins are touring a tall black locust tree, yonder. Why three? Should be a pair, as everyone knows. It could be that the third robin is a real estate salesman, pointing out the advantages of building a nest in that particular tree. One of the great advantages, would be nesting next to me for I keep suet and like goodies available for my friends of feather. feath-er. . .ARE they my friends? They perch in front of my kitchen window and tease, but, when I go out, they fly away in panic and act as though they'd never seen me before. Darn it. I get up at intervals and tune off my music station to hear the news. I wish I wouldn't for there's nothing to cheer. My natural state frustration only deepens. It de-velopes de-velopes that we have attracted one of China's fine musicians and his family. Has been here since December, De-cember, the man says. Hurrah for us! But why did we turn away another prize, fed up with the doubtful joys of Communism? Stalin's daughter? Seems to me that is the action of a bunch of crazy mixed up kids, of which I am one so are YOU, Dearie. Also, I am disappointed at the treatment our Congress has given the case of Adam Clayton Powell. If they had stripped him of his seniority, which is another name for power, and let him hold the seat which, after all he was voted into by his constituents, not presented pre-sented by the Congress, he would have lost the dearest thing in life, and the Congress wouldn't have painted itself into a corner, or something. What now? Can they go on forever denying a seat to an elected member? It does seem that a little thought would have made for a more comfortable, reasonable situation than we now find ourselves in, for this problem belongs to 'We the People." In the midst of anniversaries of unhappy memory, of death marches, starvation sieges and declarations of war, it Is nice to note that we have had The Blue Danube Waltz for one hundred years. I can hear Coach Roberts and whichever BYU women's gymn teacher was current, teaching teach-ing us the intricacies of the waltz. "Step . slide, close. . . Step, slide, close. . . I learned my dancing by 'ear'. I was always playing the piano for these sessions, caUed 'Social 'So-cial Hours. Ah, me, we little knew what dancing was coming to and it's probably just as well. We used to laugh at the Hotten-totts Hotten-totts and the Figi. . .Feegee. . . well, anyhow, those Islanders, those poor benighted savages hop ping and posturing so ridiculously and calling it dancingI 'Bye, now, and save the last waltz for me.
