Nearly 11,000 young people and adults will participate in the 1965 Orem-Scera Summer Recreation Program financed jointly by Scera, Orem City and the Alpine School District. Activities include softball, baseball, tennis, music instruction, handicraft, swimming instruction, baton twirling, basketball, volleyball, competitive swimming and diving, story telling and various other sports. The new Scera Swimming Pool is one of the finest in the state and the Scera Park, although not fully developed, promises to be one of the top beauty spots and picnicking areas in Central Utah. The Orem Kiwanis recently planted 75 additional trees in the park. The theatre, swimming pool and the 28 acre park site are community owned, all made possible through profits from the theatre patronage and from individual contributions through purchase of bonds, cash pledges and donated labor. The Sharon Cooperative and Recreational Association, which is owned by the residents of Orem by virtue of their residence in this city and who are invited to elect officers in the annual membership meeting, provides a real tax savings to the people. If the city alone were to finance the Scera Park, the swimming pool and the king-size recreation program, Orem citizens would indeed have a sizeable increase in taxes to pay. Looking to next year, Scera officers are hopeful that the area west of the swimming pool will be planted into grass. Also plans call for a picnic pavillion to be erected in 1965. In addition to the Scera Park, Orem City has the following park facilities: . CITY HALL PARK City Hall Park - 37 acres. This Is the central park of the city where much of the recreational activities of the city and the Orem-Scera baseball and softball programs are conducted. It contains two tennis courts, picnic pavillion, beautiful landscape land-scape area fronting Highway 91, and several baseball and soft-ball soft-ball fields. The Orem Veterans Council recently approved of a plan to develop a $20,000 lighted softball and baseball complex as well as adding more lawn and picnicking area. MARINA PARK v Marina Park. - 25 acres In boat harbor and 19 acres In picnic area. This park is semi-developed and is located northwest of the Geneva Steel works, which was previously known as the gjd Geneva Resort. It has large grass area with trees for shade and picnic tables. The harbor is mostly undeveloped, but does have one launching pad. Future plans call for extending the dike 1 to make a harbor, fill for parking area and additional launching areas. CANYON SPRINGS PARK Canyon Springs Park - 40 acres. This park is located in the mouth of Provo Canyon. It was originally developed by the Orem Lions Club. Seventy to 100 trees were planted and are coming along nicely. Presently the park is being developed further by the Orem Jaycees. Picnicking areas have been cleaned out and tables are In the process of being constructed. A rifle range is also located In the park. TWO OTHER PARK SITES Orem has two additional sites for possible park development. They Include a 10 acre plot acquired from Utah County in the vicinity of 1060 West 600 North, which could become a nice neighborhood park, and the city owned Taylor-Terry Farms located below the city water tanks. Also, In the offering is a golf course, which is now in the planning stage. The park and recreation faculties in Orem are destined to become increasingly more used. The start that has been made thus far has been commendable and a real tax savings has been realized as well. Thus the recreational advantages of living In Orem are again substlally In evidence.
