RonMscbam 1J JPtLK I . , ! f 1 Get To Know Your Local Officers, Law Enforcement Week May 9-15 Reed Burgener ' A veteran of 13 years In the Orera police department, Sergeant Ser-geant Burgener has long been active In Orem church and civic affairs. Born In Midway, Utah, one of 11 children, he spent his early life In Midway and Park City, moving b Drlggs, Idaho when he was 10, where he finished finish-ed school. He completed an LDS mission In Brazil. He married Letha Ercanbrack of Provo In 1934. They lived in Drlggs, Eureka and Provo, moving to Orem In 1944. They have five daughters, Dixie Let Myers, Provo, Lila Jean Nlel-son, Nlel-son, Crescent City, Calif., and Brenda, Elaine and Carol, who live at home. Bishop of the Vermont ward for five years, Sergeant Burgener Burg-ener has been a member of the, High Council of Orem Stake for 11 years. He began working for the police department Aug. 17, 1952, and served as chief of police for several years. During this time he has attended many police schools sponsored by the FBI, BYU, Utah Peace officers and Camp Williams. Vernon J. Stiel Vernon j. Stiel, Identification Officer of the Orem Police Department, De-partment, was born In Benson, Minnesota, where he lived on a farm in southern Minnesota with his parents and three brothers and three sisters. He served two years as a member of the 807 th Military Police Corps in the Caribbean Theater. In the winter of 1947 he came to Salt Lake City to attend a 9-month school In photography. While attending school he met Shirley Johnson of Provo and they were married two years later. He attended Brigham Young University for one year, then began working for Geneva Steel. Vern joined the Orem Aux. Police In 1955 and was hired as a regular, fulltlme policeman in 1958. He owns his home where he lives with his wife and four daughters. Ruth Ann will graduate this year from Orem Jr. High; Marilyn is In seventh grade at Orem Jr. High, Elaine attends first grade at GenevaElementary and Teresa will start school in one year. When he Isn't busy with police work, photography or his family, Officer Stiel enjoys being an amateur ham radio operator. Garth Wilkinson Detective Wilkinson joined the regular officers in 1961 after six years as a member of the Reserve police. Born and raised In Orem, he Is married to Rhea Lowry. They have five children, Luclnda, 14; Ricky, 12; Nancy,9; Denlse, 4, and Tony,2. Both he and his wife hold part-time Jobs, and he also is taking classes at BYU. He has been in the detective division for over a year, and is now officer in charge of this division. He has completed several sev-eral police training courses, Including In-cluding the U of U school on alcohol studies, sex seminar and police administration seminar. Active in the LDS church, he teaches Sunday School and Is secretary of the Seventies In the Vineyard Ward. Defective Wilkinson is also j rJjipfl' r l Larry E. Lunnen Chief of Police Chief Larry Lunnen Chief Lunnen was born in Murray, Mur-ray, Utah, August 1934, and lived in C resent, Utah. He went into the Military Police Unit of the Airborne Paratroopers in 1953, and was discharged in 1956. A year later he entered the Salt Lake Police department, where he worked for five and one-half one-half years, serving with all uniform uni-form divisions and specializing on the Youth Bureau and Narcotics Nar-cotics division. In 1962 he went to work foi the Treasury Department, assigned as-signed to the Alcohol Tobacco Tax Unit in Seattle. He came to Orem to be Chief of Police in October, 1963. He Is a graduate grad-uate of the University of Utah. He and his wife Kaye have a son Marty, age 6, and a daughter, Juri K, 14 months. Both active in church work, Chief Lunnen is advisor to the Priests Quorum and Boy Scout committee in the 5th Ward. Chief Lunnen has attended numerous law enforcement schools, Including the FBI school and Treasury Department training train-ing school, and is currently at tending BYU. He enjoys hunting and fishing. chairman of the Alcohol, Tobacco and Drug committee for the Orem ntv rminr.il on Children and Youth. His hobbies are golf and bowl ing. George McKinney Dispatcher McKlnney also serves Orem City as its Civil Defense director, a post he has held for 13 years. In addition, he is a volunteer ambulance drlv er and has been a member of the Ambulance Board since its beginning here 13 years ago, For over 35 years he has been active in Boy Scouting. Currently he is advancement chairman for Cub Pack 3191 in the 21st ward. Starting as a patrolman in July, 1958, he became Desk Sergeant and Chief Dispatcher for the police department. (The position of Desk Sergeant has since been eliminated.) He is married to Mlsha Foote, and they are parents of three i j in. T 14 sons: ttaymona, ii; unuv, xr and James. 9. He also has three daughters by a previous mar riage, and four grandcnuaren. Born in California, he grew up in the seatue-1 acoma area of Washington. Fred Schwendiman Patrolman scnwendiman was born In Salt Lake City and lived there until the age of 12. When he moved to Orem he graduated from Lincoln Jr. High and Orem High Schools. He served 6 months In the army as a clerk and In 1960 married Maureen Madsen. They have 2 children, Todd, 3 12 and Teri, 2. He attended BYU for 1 semister and then enrolled in the Utah Valley Hos plthl School of Radiological Tech nology. He spent 2 years In this school and became a registered x-ray technician. He joined the Orem Police Reserve In August of 1964 and recleved his appointment to the regular police force In December, Decem-ber, 1964. At the time of his appointment he was serving as president of the Utah State Soci ety of Radiological Technologist, and was a staff Technician at Utah Valley Hospital. Since becoming a member of the Police Force he has graduated from the Camp Williams Police Academy and completed a basic training course given by the police po-lice Department. His hobles are hunting, fishing and working in his yard. Boyd Ward A native Los Angeleno, Sergeant Ser-geant Ward spent his early life in Farmlngton, Utah, Alberta, Canada, and Salinas, California. After beginning a major in forestry forest-ry at Utah State University, he was called to an LDS mission the first missionary to serve for his ward in Salinas. He came back to Utah where he attended College of Southern Utah. At CSU he was once again active In sports, student government govern-ment and church work, serving as homecoming chairman, Let-terman Let-terman club president, member of the student council andGamml Psl fraternity, and was elected Most Preferred Man." In June, 1959, while driving bus for Utah Parks Company, he met his future wife, Janlne Last. They now have three children, child-ren, Donna Janene, 4, Shelly Ann, 2, and Brent Allen, two months. During his army service Officer Of-ficer Ward took military police training. He joined the Orem police in 1962, and became a traffic sergeant a year ago. Wayne Shepherd Patrolman Shepherd has lived in Orem for 25 out of his 27 years. It was during the time he was a member of the Police Auxiliary and Reserve that he discovered that law enforcement work was what he wanted. Before Be-fore this time he had been employed em-ployed by Geneva Steel, Shum-way's Shum-way's American, Meadow Gold, Utah Valley Roofing in Orem and Peter Built Utility Trailers in Salt Lake. Officer Shepherd has now been with the police department for 14 months. A son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur L. Shepherd, Wayne graduated from Lincoln high school in 1956. He married Marsha Wright of Heber, and they have three sons, Lindsay D., Bruce Wayne, Chris V. and Kyle A. During his off-duty hours, Officer Of-ficer Shepherd enjoys hunting and fishing. He also completed eight schools and In-service training classes to increase his abilities as an officer. LaVon Johansen Patrolman Johansen grew up in Mount Pleasant, Utah, and Joined the Merchant Marines at 16 as an Ordinary Seaman. After two years he enlisted In the Marines, seeing combat duty In Korea. He spent most of his adult life working in steel fabrication, holding to a desire to work in law enforcement After 13 months of service with the police depart ment, Patrolman Johansen says he feels he made a wise decision: "The personal satisfaction that comes from public service is most rewarding." He and his wife (the former Louise Roberts of Provo) are parents of six children: Michael, 16; Donna Lee, 13; Sandra, 11; Charles, 10; Christine, 5; and Marcla, 2. Active In the Orem 2nd Ward, Patrolman Johansen's current assignments Include home teaching, coordinator of the ward blood bank and coun selor In the MIA. Jean Burnham As secretary, Jean Burnham is the only woman In the Orem police department. She was born in Mesa, Arizona, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Hunsaker. She grew up In Mesa and gradua ted from the Mesa High School, active In the school government. She attended one year at the Arizona Ari-zona State University In Tempe, Arizona. She married Rex Merrill Burnham Burn-ham In 1957, who at that time was in the U.S. Navy in San Diego. When he was discharged from the Navy they moved to Utah. His parents were from Lehl and Pleasant Grove. Mrs. Burnham came to work for Orem City In August 1962, in the water department moving to the police department as secretary sec-retary in February of 1964. Jean's family Includes two boys, Jeff, 5 and Todd, 4. They are members of the Orem 7th Ward.1 She was recently elected as, secretary to the Womens Auxiliary Auxil-iary to the Orem Police Mutual Aid. Jean enjoys swimming, hunting hunt-ing and horseback riding. Byron Penrod Patrolman Penrod was a California Cal-ifornia for a brief six months after bis birth, till his parents, both former Provoans, returned' home. He grew up in Provo, attending Franklin, Maeser and Dixon, and graduating from Provo. high. Active In sports with baseball his favorite, Byron played on all-star teams in Little League, Pony League, Chief League and American Legion. Tournaments with these teams took him to Helper and Salt Lake then to Santa Monica, San Bernardino, Bern-ardino, and Pocatello. His Army service took him to Fort Ord, Calif. He and his wife moved to Orem in 1961. She is employed at Hercules Powder company. Before joining the police de partment he was employed at the Utah Valley Hospital as an x-ray technician. During the eight months he was a member of the Police Reserve he completed the basic and advanced training classes at Camp Williams. Val Killpack, Reed Olson, Bob Toby Bath Patrolman Bath was born Feb. 18, 1940 in Mc Gill Nev. He lived in McGUl and Ely until he was 12 when his family moved to Pleasant Grove and lived there for three years. They then moved to Orem and Toby attended Orem high school, graduating in 1958. In 1959 he went into the National Guard for 6 months active duty. In May 1959 he was married to Dianne Smith In Orem. They have two children; Lorl Lynn age 5, and Brian Toby, age 1 12. Patrolman Bath started with the Police Department full time In April, 1964, after working with the Reserve police for approxi- matly 8 months Diior. He has attended several schools in Provo and at Camp Williams plus In- service training within the police department in Orem. Jim Simmons Lieutenant Simmons, born in St. George, moved to Orem in 1941 with his parents, Florence and the late E.W.Simmons. During Dur-ing the early years of his life he worked with his father at Simmons Lumber and Hardware company. He attended Sharon and Lincoln schools and studied for two years at BYU and spent another two years in the U. S. Army. Jim and his wife, the former LaJoy Dove, have two children, Tamara Jean, 6, and Edward David, 3. Her parents, the David Doves, have since moved to Orem. A member of the Orem police department since October, 1959, Officer Simmons became a sergeant serg-eant in 1962 and a lieutenant In 1964. Like many other fellow officers, he enjoys hunting and fishing in his spare time, as well as pistol shooting and mechanics. Lieutenant Simmons is a mem ber of the Orem 16th Ward in which he is an Elder. Leon Laws Patrolman Laws attended cnhnnls in Provo and Orem be fore enlisting In the U. S. Army at the age of 17. Most oi nis three years In the army were spent in Hawaii where he trained as a ligm aruuery repairman. Returning to Provo where he lived with his grandmother, he worked on construction building the BYU movie studio. He learned to fly light planes at the Provo school directed by Merrill Christopherson. At this time he met Marilyn cooper of Orem, the girl who became his ! rrr-" 4 ,w '1 fa wife. A few months after his marriage he enlisted in the Air Force and was sent to Altus, Oklahoma, where he was In charge of 30 men in the Civil Englnerlng Squadron. While in the air force he completed his high school education and received credit in advanced training. Returning to Orem after four years service, he Joined the police po-lice department and Is buying a home here. Leon uses his spare time training train-ing his two registered German Police dogs and his two horses. He enjoys horseback riding and hunting. Ted Peacock Born and raised in Orem, he attended Lindon, Geneva and Lincoln Lin-coln schools. He spent six years in the Utah Air National Guard, with five years as an Air Policeman. Police-man. Married to Cynthia Whetten, they have two boys, Russell Lynn, 5, and Lance Leon, 2. He serves in the Orem 7th Ward as an .Explorer leader. Ted joined the Auxiliary police in 1960, and the following year became a regular officer. After serving as a traffic sergeant for two years he was assiped to the Detective division In July, 1964. He has spent much time In special training and seminars in police work. Presently he is on the board of directors for the Orem Police Mutual Aid and is secretary-treasurer secretary-treasurer of the Central Utah Peace Officers. His hobbles are hunting and pistol shooting. Gary Guymon Newest member of the Orem police department is Gary L. Guymon, the animal control officer. of-ficer. Born in Ucon, Bonneville County, Idaho, he was raised on his father's farm there. After graduation from Bonneville high school he Joined the U. S. army and spent most of his service as a military policeman in Korea. He filled an LDS mission inAus- While living In SaltLake where he attended Weltech College, he met and married Judy Hatch; then went to work in Seattle for Boeing as an electronic technician. techni-cian. Returning to Utah, he worked work-ed as a salesman until joining the police department. The Guymon's have three children, Steven Warren, 2, Jen-nette Jen-nette Lyn, 1 and David Rex, two weeks. While living in Hinckley he worked work-ed road construction after he graduated from High School. Ron married Cheryl Ogden In Delta and they moved to Orem In 1955. He continued to work lh road construction and later went to work for Geneva Rock Products as a truck driver and heavy equipment equip-ment operator. At this time he Joined the Orem Police reserve, served one year and was hired on the Orem Police department full time in 1957. Ron, now a traffic sergeant, has attended Camp Williams Police Academy, FBI firearms training schools as well as crime conferences throughout the state. He has served serv-ed as a director in the Central Utah Police Officers Association and is now Vice President in the Orem Police Mutal Aid. His hobbies are fishing, hunt This is '"Look!
