Show T 1 : OREM-GENEVA TIMES Thursday, June 20, 1963 PUGGY AMERICA'S MOSf LOVE ABLE LADDIE x suppose YreRTfomw RV A. MiLF r Ml VOU CAN VQ I'LL GETTRa BETTER! ARROW RlSrTn UTHE BULL'S ' By Ruth Louise Partridge Thus. June 13, 1963 and chit number 261. Another death from the bus crash. . . wasn't a crash strictly strict-ly speaking. . . The truck rollover roll-over down Hole-in-the-Rock way. I just got back from there you remember. We jolted alone in cattle trucks too, but not THAT many to a truck, for heaven's sake. The bishop of the ward I live in died. It is a sad community, this. Flags at half mast. I think these BYU faculty deaths are the first violent vio-lent deaths since my father was killed. Brought it all back. My brother Lyman and family fam-ily finally arrived. They were here Monday eve. I took the whole kit and biling to Eldred Manor to dinner with me as I was already pledged to an evening with a certain organization organ-ization out there. I had a lot of fun telling my visitors they were going to eat out at the quote "Poor House" and unquote. un-quote. My brother couldnt remember re-member when it was called that, but I can. Then it was changed to 'County Infirmary' and then, finally the fine new plant was built out there and the old buildings abandoned. It was changed again to "Eldred Sunset Manor" and there is little resemblance to the old way of doing things. The food served out there is so un-believabley un-believabley good that one has to experience it to know. My guests from Ellensburg, Washington Wash-ington were a very surprised outfit indeed. Always fun to upset the ideas -and routine of people generally. Saw a good many people we knew out there, too. The Eldred Eld-red Manor is a unique bit of philanthropy and community enterprise any way you look at it, has no resemblance to what used to called a "poor house" whatever. We do make progress pro-gress in human dignity in spite of ourselves. But always in spite of ourselves. our-selves. There used to be, in the middle mid-dle of Provo City Cemetery when it was called "the graveyard" grave-yard" a little plot enclosed by a wooden fence. This was the "Potters Field". The grass was never clipped. The weeds grew tall -- in fact the only grass was wild. None was planted. The grave markers were always al-ways wood with faded dates, names, and always leaning every which way. I rather liked lik-ed the unkept look of things. I always leaned toward wilderness wild-erness areas and if you don't believe me, come and look at my lot. Well, all of a sudden the Potters Field disappeared. Nothing No-thing left of It at all. Now, everything is well clipped, well mowed, all of a sameness and what ever became of that little plot, I wonder? Were the graves moved? What happened to the wooden markers? Soma day I must ask the sexton what ever became of Provo's Potter's Field. Don't know how I got on to this but since I did, 111 ask whatever be came of a vault that used to be out there, too. One could look through iron gates a white interior with two or three sarcophagi ... I Think thats the plural of sarcophagus and if you don't know what it is, look it up, Dearie. Anyhow, that too has disappeared at least I cannot find it and I just wonder why. Does seem that people should be able to bury their dead in a vault if they like. I don't see why we have to have everything of a sameness same-ness around here. And now I must cease and desist. Expect the Ellens-burges Ellens-burges here for the day and there is dinner to get for seven SEVEN! Murder! 'Bye, now.
