Show Orem - Geneva Times Wednesday May 29, 1963 AS m. A in u t i a mm tmm Ey'Ruth Louise Partridge ;n n rt WWW mi ran May 14, 1963 ani chit number num-ber 250 and I'm writing this on xuesaay. Yes, I'm confused. You see, Friday morning I take on ior tnree days with the State Historical trek to the Hole-in-the-Rock Dy way of Escalante. One can drive right up to the top of the "hole" in a car from Escalante ana park on the rocks where the Mormon pioneers, fixing a way down the Hole-in-the- tfocK for their wagons, used to dance of an evening. It isn't really a "hole", it's a crevass. They sent scouts up and down the rim of the Colorado Colo-rado looking for a place to get own. iney never found one but they went down anyhow. In one spot they found a crack xnat came to within about forty nve leet of the rim. They blasted blast-ed out that forty five feet and came down the crack, wagons, horses, men women and children child-ren alike. In one place they dug a slit in ths living rock, put the wagon wa-gon wheel in, on that side, and slid with the other wheel hanging out over the wild blue yonder with only staves stuck in holes and brush piled on between be-tween them and two thousand feet of fall. You can't believe it, looking at it but soon It won't be there to see for the Colorado River is already backing up behind the dam. It is a great pity that we must Jose this monument to valor, human inginuity and a good many other things. But, this lake will be a fantastic thing But don't go out on it without your water wings, Dearie. There won't be any beach in most places. Just step off into how many fathoms is two thousand feet? Well, anyhow, Amelia Buckley Buck-ley and I are going on the trek and It dawned on me I'd better bet-ter get this column in early. Has been quite a day. The blast off this morning, twelve minutes to go and a tracking station in Bermuda queers the do. It was funny, in a way All the gadgets that are too com plicated to be understood by anything but a BRAIN and what holds ud the show at Cape Canaveral? Why. a low ly diesel engine! I hope I've spelled it right. You should see how I'm trying to type this. 1 11 tell you how: When I sat down here and rattled off a line, no line. Blank paper excepting ex-cepting a few smudges here and there. Now. I'm about as heMess with a tynwriter as a eirl can be. I type by ear and have no more idea what to do with a stubborn machine than a hot- tentot. WHAT TO DO? Too late to take it to town, must set it written and in. So I sat i a while in thought then, Dear ie. I nut in n sheet of carbon and and I'm hammering away nnrt the rmt I hand in will ha from the cartoon and the sheet I'm hammering on Is blank except for those cute little smudses. Where there's a will, there's a way. they tell me. Well, let's see . . . Mother's riav ramp nnH went and we lived through it. I worked, of course. The house is full of ffifts. flowers, candv. jards and what have you. Now I must somehow get everyone thanked thank-ed for their great kindness and how I'm going to do it I don't know. I m just not the girl I used to be and never was. Haven't packed a thine for the trip. Hope I can find mv hiking overalls and that they are reasonably clean. Will only need them when and If T actually clamber down the Hole-ln-the-Rock. Must find those black shoelaces I bought and get them into mv vm shoes. Comfortable shoes.
