How many other people do you know that have a potato named for them? The thing Is, the Irish potato is a native of America but it was introduced into Ireland and provided a tasty cheap food to which the Sons and Daughters of the old sod took at once. It became the staple food and one wonders what they had before the ad vent of the potato from Amer ica. Certain it was that Ire land, always for some reason so desperately poor was bless ed by the potato as few vege tables have blessed. Ireland put so much store and hope and dependence on the potato that in a year when the crop failed, for some reason or other, the Irish died of starvation star-vation right on the streets and no one or nothing to help. This starvation sparked on the Irish rush to America. They came in unnumbered thous ands to build the railroads, fighting with the Chinese col-ies col-ies to do it, like as not. There lot was never a happy one but the Irish are a hardy lot and through it all the lyric voices of the Irish tenors have lifted the hearts of less gifted people. Why didn't I write all this last week and have it come out today instead of writing it today artd having it come out next week? Don't , answer that. What ever became of that grandiose scheme for a win-ter-and , year round - sports project which was to be complete com-plete with sky hooks i mean ski lifts clear up to Maple Flat, or some such? Wasn't Lowel Thomas interested in it or some'.h'na? Is that still a possibility? Not that Ruth ever expects to take advantage advant-age of. You wouldn't get me on any such contraption, but it did sound so Swiss Alps, or something, that I could hardly beleive it at the time. Now I just wonder if it was a mirage, or something. Speaking of ski ing, we have a young friend named David who tells me a hunch of adventurdus dare devils skied from Brighton over to Heber. Now I'm sure he said Brighton. To hear him tell it it' was a lark but one wonders why they didn't break their necks. From what he says I gather that they sailed right over the unfort unates who fell down-and that would be everybody and no bones broken. There i3 a special spec-ial providence that looks after children, idiots and skiers. I'm listening to a California radio station. They're talking with Dennis Day. I miss that one. I wish we had that quick witted character with us at this meeting that's going on at Geneva. The boys from Moscow Mos-cow are dancing circles around us and we just bumble along picking up points as the Russians Rus-sians drop them. I don't know. What has become of our touted Yankee shrewdness? Why can't we keep our minds on our work and once in a while -just once in a while carry the ball? We act like yokels-anrf of course we are yokels whe" it comes to intrigue. Well, we better learn fast.
