MEMBER: Utah Stale Press Association Subscription Rales: One year. In advance $3-00 THE WATKINS CASE If we were to believe everything we read in the papers lately we'd be mighty unhappy and dissatisfied abot our senator from Orem and his record on the senafte floor. He has been called "one of the three strongest isolationists" isolation-ists" of the senate. He has been accused of being against President Truman's decision to send troops to Korea, and he has been accused of "just not understanding." All are indictments which are serious, but indictments indict-ments which his friends' here know are not quite true. Senator Watkins' friends here know that he is a stubborn stub-born man a man of great convictions. His earnestness in demanding an adherence to statutes which provide . that only Congress can declare war led, we feel, to his hesitation in approving President Truman's decision. His friends here see in the Senator's recent action some of that old stubborn earnestness refusal to compromise which were so important in getting Scera built during difficult times, in establishing Mt. A Lake, and in the growth of Sharon stake. Of course the Senator's "friends of the opposition" have made political hay of his seeming isolationism and his seeming hesitation to whole-heartedly wage war on. the aggressors of Nonth Korea. We suspect that his political future has been damaged. Although it is easy, for those who know Senator Watkins, to understand his response to the crisis which President Truman's decision brought to (the senate, it it difficult indeed to justify his opposition to a step which so quickly received the stamp of approval of the American people. ; v PEACE WITH RUSSIA We ought to remember that the real conflict in the world today is a conflict of ideas and that ideas are not empowered by physical force. There is no evidence that Soviet plan for world conquest is by military power. There program is rather one of propaganda and infiltration. infil-tration. It is not a military threat that Russia presents to the world. You do not bomb ideas out of existence. Reducing the Kremlin to ashes and prominent Russian cities to. ruin would not destroy communism. Ideas can be mastered only with other ideas. It was a wise statement state-ment of Hanson W. Baldwin, military expert of 'The New York Times," made public recently: "It would be ' wrong to make inevitable by our action what is not inevitable." in-evitable." The exhortation of St. Paul that "If it be possible, as much as in you lies, be at peace with all men" means much more than we have made it mean. "If it be possible," poss-ible," not profitable, using our best intelligence and goodwill. Surely it means more than a passive assent to peace if conditions are favorable. It means a definite and positive attempt to overcome a war psychology that has cursed us with a fatalism that war is inevitable. inevit-able. It means that Christians should think peace and talk peace and bear testimony in their lives to a way of life that will naturally create peaceful attitudes. They should both work and pray for peace. As the children child-ren of God, they should be peace makers and know the blessing of such. Michigan Christian Advocate 1 Does farm work better, faster, cheaper UTAH FOV.'Za & LICIT CO. Cwirh!? Strawberries: New Berry Varieties Berry growers will be interested inter-ested in the many new varieties of strawberries being introduced. introduc-ed. While Marshall Mar-shall is without question the top quality berry, it loses its eye appeal by the time it reaches the consumer market. Berries with less eating quality but an attractive eye appeal move out of the markets much faster than Marshall. Some of the new varieties are combining high eating quality with good eye eppeal at the consumer's market. These are the varieties growers will be interested in. Long before there were such things as big loans and modern homes there were people who understood what it takes to make a home. A woman and man who desire to make a home can without all the fuss and to do the kids go through today take the Lawrence Law-rence Gibsons and their charming charm-ing riverside cottage, that was started from an old barn, and a desire to own a home. They have built into that dream cottage cot-tage the real meaning of 'home.' And they are generous to share Iheir home, enthusiasm and plans. In my business selling real estate. I see a great many homes I see homes as bare of love and attention a some people are of real affection. Other homes, like the one on the corner north from my home looks like an artist's ar-tist's dream of a vine-covered cottage. If people could realize the significance of the personalities person-alities expressed in a home, they would get busy and do something some-thing about the place they live in and call home. I have a little client who will never be happy- in any . home long. Oh yes, she imagines she will she is a wanting female, she wants this n' that . . . she moves from one place to another. an-other. Recently she sold her husband on the bright idea that it is better to own a home than to rent, so he went along with her on this whim. Now she wants a better home she has to sacrifice a part of their equity to make a change. So the result: they cannot get a GI or FHA loan because their credit rating is questioned. They are out in the street, bceause they haven't the down payment to buy and they are quite surprised to find that renting isn't all sunshine and hay because they have two babies. Moral: their little dump might have grown into a real home as did the Gibsons'. tfHMPANG C3ATCIKIEEIY . NOW OFFERS YOU A SPECIALLY PRICED LAYING MASH AND HOG FEED . . .
