A Phone IN THE MAILBAG Editor of the Orem-Geneva Times: We noted with -interest your recent editorial entitled "Jealous of P. G.?" Of course all the sport fans would like to see a baseball team in Orem. Naturally it would add to the recreation program. pro-gram. There are so many other fine things that we might have in Orem if we had the money. I. We have a dozen areas in our city where youngsters are living in sub-divisions with no play areas except the street. 2. There are a hundred or more enthusiastic tennis fans who would like to play tennis. There are no courts. 3. Many of the oldsters and younger sets have felt for some time that Orem should have a eolf course. 4. This summer onr fine swimming pool will be clod as we are unable to meet the State Board of Health require ments in remodeling the pool. If we only had a $20,000 an nual budget we could at least make a beginning of some of these very fine projects. Certain ly as Orem grows and our revenue reven-ue increases all of these will become be-come "musts" in planning our recreation program. In order to enter the baseball league this summer it would be necessary to build a baseball field and light it, build bleach ers and enclose the field with a good fence. Conservatively this would cost $25,000. The Orem City Dads are taxed to the limit of their wits to know how to meet current expenses in building build-ing roads as well as making wat er and sewer evtensions that are imperative if people are to live in our community. Last year Orem's City budget for recreation was $1,100. This, together with an equal amount from the Alpine Schol Board and Scera financed our entire recreation program for the year. This gives no money for building facilities. In spite of this we feel quite certain that many communities are jealous of the national publicity pub-licity given to Orem's summer recreation program. The National Nation-al Recreation Magazine sent a special representative to Orem for a feature story. In the three-page three-page article that appeared in the magazine we quote briefly from Dr. Brinley, the author: "Although "Al-though Orem City is only semi-urban semi-urban and has less than 8,000 people, it presents one of the finest recreation programs of any city of similar size in the United States. Last year there were 68 Softball teams organized organiz-ed in five leagues which meant over 1,000 young people participating, partic-ipating, not on the grand stands but on the field playing. Many communities feel if they can organize or-ganize two or three teams they have done well. Not so in Oi.em, Utah. Besides the Softball leagues leag-ues there are nearly 1,000 little children who were regularly en - tertamed in kiddies play activ - ities. There were classes offered in music for all ages and given free of charge." Is anyone jealous of Orem's recreation program? Apparently so from the hundreds of invest - igations that come from all uarts of the country asking how we can do it on so limited a budget. In spite of this we are for a baseball team. It would be a fine project for some group; say the Lions or better still a base- ball association, to collect mon- jl ey and build a field and light lj and equip it. With good manage-II manage-II ment this particular sDort can :: be Self-SUDD0rtin2 and pvpntual. ly pay for the entire expense of building the ball field. It would be most important if a project could be undertaken j secure land for play areas.
