I'opulism-Aiid-criino is mi ele-men ele-men l u li it-It is discounted not only in Ulnli but throughout I lie United Stales. It does not possess one patriotic impulse. It is perhaps the absence ol any political issue in the pres eat campaign in Utah which expluins why so many person ulities arc indulged in by all classes except the Indies. Last week Thursday the people peo-ple of Canudu voted on the prohibition question throughout the dominion, with barely one-fourth one-fourth of the legal voters going to the polls. In consideration of that fact the government announces an-nounces it will ignore the result. Over in Juab county, an eloquent elo-quent local, politician was x-plaining x-plaining the delects of one of the legislative candidates on the opposite ticket to a little collection col-lection of admiring friends, lie grew eloquent, and closed hi argument by the unanswerable logic, "he wears cuffs." The Illinois" was successfully success-fully launched at NewportNews. Va., Tuesday afternoon, and the battleship was christened by Miss Nancy Letter of Chicago. This man of-war will be ready for a coating of war paint, if necessary, on October 5, 1S9D. The ''Wisconsin" will be christened chris-tened and launched nt San Francisco Fran-cisco on November 26th next. While not in the least questioning the sound judgment of President McKinley, still the writer cannot help but think that our two battleships. "Iowa" nd "Oregon" might with advantage bo sent to Manila by way of the Suez canal. It would shorten the route by domewhere near 5,000 miles than by going around the Horn. Besides it would permit of a speedy collection of that bill Turkey owes for the destruction of American property in that country, by the soldiers of the sultan, and which that official refuses to pay. The destruction took place during the times of the Armenian masacres. Around nearly every town will be found some Young men who Ppend their time from one year's end to another on the lookout for h soft place. Tbev have the swell head too bad to go to work nt anything that will soil their cuffs, or raise a sweat, and no one has confidence enough in their willingness to work to trust them in positions of responsibility. On the other hand we see young men start out by taking any kind of work that comes along. If they fail to find positions in a store or office they go to the farms or shops. In a short time these young men are found occupying the best place to be found. A willingness to do an honest day's work at any kind of labor is better recommendation to a young man in the eyes of business busi-ness men than all the high collars and tight-fitting trousers he can ever , wear. At a meeting of the executive committee of the International Union of American Republics, held at the state departmental Washington this week, the Venezuelan minister suggested -L 1 1 " , " ', that Mr. Frederic Emoivs continue in tho director-hip of the Bureau of American lie publics until November I. Thiswa in view of the fact that iheterin of Mr. Emory's present vim mixtion will expire on the first of October. Mr. Josenh 1. r I Smith, last February, and has been contiiitied since then as orovisioiial director bv action from time to tiuio on the part l the executive committee. i Bradstreet's. WE WAST THE TRUTH. The Independent lately uttered: ut-tered: "Tho editor or The Herald is wide of the facts when he asserts that 'among the various issues llicmie that Is easily ttrst is that of free silver' between be-tween the Democratic and llepiililicaii parties, and the respective platforms adopted hy them In this state, this year. The Herald does not explain very clearly what it means, fur where every political party this )ear in Utah has a free-silver plank, reailm alike, there cannot he ati issue, for all are In accord." The Utah County Democrat, the cleanest and brightest party paper of that faith in the state, lays upou The Independent this chastening rod: ''The editor of The Independent well knows that, notwithstanding the silver-plated plank in the ltepuhlican state and county platforms, .still that party even locally stands for the gold standard of the St. Louis platform." At. I he lust Republican con veil- tion for Utah county the editor of The Democrat was present and knew: First That a free silver platform was then and there adopted, and that he so published the fact as a matter of news in his paper in its next succeeding suc-ceeding issue. Second In the same Issue he distinctly dis-tinctly published that t he convention refused to iudurse the St. Louis platform. plat-form. Thft Democrat is mistaken. Both the Republican and Democratic Dem-ocratic parties, as well us Pop-ulisin-nnd Crime, demand the free and unlimited coinage of silver at (he ratio of 16 to 1 and independent of any other nation. there can be no issue where all political parties declare for ami believe in the same monetary principle. By the way. the Republican Re-publican party in county convention con-vention assembled raised the local issue that our Democratic friends have been wasteful and extravagant in conducting the affairs of this county. Instead of riding your semi-weekly Rozinante in search for an impossible im-possible silver issue, just den y The Enquirer's indictment. We independent voters want the facts from both sides. Can we have from their excellent and authoritative newspaper these facts? It charges that the Democracy of Utah county have raised the salaries of county officers from somewhere near $6,000 a year under the old People's party to $20,000 a year under Democracy and besides have incurred a county indebtedness upward of $lo,000, although the county was out of debt. Thii is not to be considered as in anyway the opinion or conclusion of this journal. Perhaps the indebtedness indebted-ness and higher salaries were necessary. It should be explained. ex-plained. The character of some splendid men and women are assailed. They found you wandering wan-dering from the fold. They are your partners. When they are assailed they are entitled to a clean, honest, truthful, brave and manly defense from your dignified and good self. Never mind about 1G to 1. With both the Democrats and Republicans in the east favoring the single gold standard, there is absolutely no hope of even a vote in congress on that proposition propo-sition until after December, 1901. Its discussion at this time is entirely out. of place. EXPLAINS ITS POSITION. The Springville Independent takes very gentlemanly issue with us on our attacks on new comers who are uftcr fat offices continually, soin-- of l hem being hardly , tax payers, except on a bicycle, or..omn small article of that kind. The Independent rather takes the view that the Enquirer is opposed to new-coiners, new-coiners, who aie not tax-pnyers, which is an entire mistake. What, this paper is opposed to is to that class coming into the county, and eternally running for office, hihI with the rich salaries paid them, not even buying homes or otherwise showing a disposition to become bonahMe residents of the state. We say that they should not be put up for ollice, and when they are nominated they should be snowed under so coinp'etely that they will be made to realize that Utah is no place for carpetbag carpet-bag politicians. Enquirer. DON'T SNL'B THE BOYS. Don't snub a boy because of the ignorance of his parents. Shakespeare, the world's poet, was the son of u man who was unable to write his own name. Don't snub a boy because his home is plain and unpretending. Abraham Lincoln's curly home was a log cabin. Don't snub a boy because he choosLs a humble trade. The author of the "Pilgrim's Progress" Pro-gress" was a tinker. Don't snub a boy becauso of dullness in his lesions. Hogarth, the celebrated painter and engraver, was a stupid boy at his books. Don't snub a bov because he stutters. Demosthenes, the great orator of Greece, overcame a harsh and stammering voice. Don't snub a boy for any reason not only because he may some day outstrip you in the race of life, but because it is neither kind, nor right, nor Christian Ex. One of the interesting results of the war is the discovery that while excited in anticipation of a fight the volunteer soldiers are all right. They are brave in action. However, they are unfit for garrison duty, do not take kindly to discipline, and in some instances by a display of lawless s by a display ol lawless ire disgraced the piglL on earned by volunteeff . There is a large majority of them who would make tho best of material s members of the regular army The experience has taught the people the necessity existing for a standing army of at least '200,-000 '200,-000 men. The need of that number is apparent when we remember how little reliance can be placed in the militia of the several states. They are utterly valueless outside of the Fourth of July purades. Soldiers who stop to argue with their officers at any time should be speedily mustered out. McKinley Day. The cause of temperance progresses, though not always in lines most advocated by temperance tem-perance reformer?. The demand of employers that employes shall not be frequenters of saloons, or. addicted to drink, steadily grows, nnd is a potent persuasive per-suasive to habits of temperance. As a matter of hygiene nil intoxicants are more nnd more discountenanced where physical endurance is demanded. The athlete miis.t abstain when in (raining, and military authorities authori-ties are coining to an agreement that the health and morale of the army is best maintained by complete elimination of the old-lime old-lime whisky ration. The difference differ-ence between the workmanship of oursaiiors and of the Spanish in recent engagements, we can scarcely doubt, was duo in a great degree to the fact that on our fleet no liquor was served, while Cervera's men were plied with unlimited grog. A steady reform is progressing in the army as well as the navy, ami it is to be h"ped that tho surviving sur-viving canteen system will soon be a thing of the -past. A significant indication of the trend in this direction, along with General M les' order against the use of intoxicants by soldiers exposed to the hardships hard-ships of the Cuban Hiupnign, was the unanimous report of the committee on the alcoholic liquor traffic to the late house of Representatives in favor oi a law prohibiting the sale of intoxicating in-toxicating liquors on reservations reserva-tions and in buildings controlled by the United States. This would work a most desirable reform, and despite the immense power of the liquor interest will certainly some day be enacted. Christian Intelligencer. In a work on the morphine habit, lately published in Paris, much interesting information is given concerning morphinism and mtyphinomania, some of which will be new to American -trT-t- staled that Germany, France and the United Slates are the countries in which the vice is most widespread, wide-spread, but that it has its victims vic-tims in Russia, Sweden and Turkey, and that even in the extreme east morphine as a narcotic is said to be .supplanting .supplant-ing opium. Statistics are furnished of 1,000 cases, collected collect-ed from nil parts of the world 050 men and 350 women. These statislies show that of the male morphinists the medical pro-fession pro-fession supplied the largest number, 40 per cent. Men ol leisure come next, with 15 per per cent; then merchants, eight per cent; while peasants, clergymen clergy-men and politicians occupy the lowest position on the list. Women of means are the most numerous class among the females, 43 per cent; followed by wives of medical men, 10 per cent. In Germany there are entire villages whose inhabitants in-habitants are all addicted to the use of the drug, but the general belief that the morphine habit is more extensively practiced in Paris than in any other city is contradicted. Morphinomania is said to occur with the greatest frequency between the ages of 25 and 40. The direct action that morphine exerts on the organs of generation in both sexes, producing pro-ducing impotence in the male and amenorrhea in the female, is too well attested to need argument. The prognosis of mor-phiuomunia mor-phiuomunia is stilted to be favorable, although relapses ure frequent. Journal of Inebriety. Ine-briety. ' A Frightful HlunoVr.
