Sculpturing contestants, anyone with a cosmic imagination, are invited in-vited to create an all-aluminum spacecraft to be displayed and judged judg-ed at the planetarium during Astronomy Day, according to Glenn Taylor, education director for the Hansen Planetarium. Entries must be made entirely of aluminum products and delivered to lie planetarium on Friday, April 18, Wore 8 p.m. Aluminum was selected as the contest material because of its wide use in aviation and space programs, according to Al Remington, Utah area business manager of Reynolds Aluminum Recycling Company co- sponsor of the contest. This year is Hie 100th anniversary of aluminum. Aluminum is helping scientists peer far into space, deep within the earth and even into the ultimate forces of nature," said Remington. The Apollo 11 spacecraft which carried men to the moon in 1969 contained con-tained more than one million pounds of aluminum and the Boeing 747 jumbo jet contains 165,000 pounds of aluminum." Prizes for best sculptures will be awarded in two categories: Best Individual In-dividual or Family entry (one to 10 Participants) and Best Group, organization or School Class entry D to 40 participants). Contest rules state each entry shall be no higher than 36 inches with a base no larger than 24 inches square. Each entry must include a small card with the entrant's name and brief description of the spacecraft. Entries will be judged and winners announced on April 19 between 10 a.m. and noon. Honored judges will include Aristotle, Galileo and friends. Prizes for the best individual family fami-ly entry will include a one-year family fami-ly membership to the Hansen Planetarium, a case of Pepsi-Cola, Pepsi T-shirts and caps, Reynolds Aluminum coolers, caps, magnets and Reynolds. Best group entry prizes (for each participant in the group limit of 40 people) will include a pair of planetarium star show tickets, commemorative com-memorative Halley's comet posters,-a posters,-a six-pack of Pepsi and a roll of Reynolds Wrap. Contest details and application forms are available at the Hansen Planetarium or the Salt Lake City area Reynolds Recycling Center. Application forms are due on or before April 14 at the planetarium. Accoridng to Taylor, the sculpturing contest is just part of the day's planned plan-ned activities celebrating National Astronomy Day.
