As one advances ad-vances in the levels of the game it becomes more crucial. At the highest level, the return of serve will often determine the winner of the match. The following are five ideas that are important in returning the serve. These ideas are applicable from novice to professional. 1. To return the serve well, you should be present-oriented. The serve and the return of serve takes but a few short seconds. Concentration should be keen and focused on the ball and task. 2. The split step is important. As the server puts the ball into the air to serve, you should take a step forward and split. The split step is similiar to doing a ' 'hop scotch" step into the 1 and 2 of a hop scotch. The split step will get you ready, start some momentum into the shot and put you into rhythm with the ball and point. The step is done lightly and on the balls of your feet. 3. The shoulder turn into the ball should immediately follow the split step. The forehand or backhand turn is a quick movement that starts the backswing of the stroke you have determined to use in the return. Stay on balance in the turn. 4. A conservative backswing should often be considered in returning the serve. When the serve is hit easily, a more aggressive backswing can be used. However, the serve will often not allow much time in preparation of the stroke. A short smooth backswing will get the racquet to the ball quickly. 5. Hit through the ball! ! The return of serve is a stroke. Be sure and drive through the ball offensively with your normal upward swing. This thinking will often get your racquet squarely to the ball in front of your body. The return of serve should be practiced. Take the time and develop this shot!! THE - i " Specializing in Hearty Homemade Stews, Soups, Chili and Homemade Bread.
