They're . all behavior people, especially children, are more likely to engage in the more TV they watch, according to the TV-Turnoff Network. Because of the devastating ' way television promotes pro-motes these behavior behav-ior patterns and other reasons, the organization encourages kids and adults to take a seven-day break from television in its annual "TV-Turnoff "TV-Turnoff Week," April 19 to 25. Excessive television tele-vision can also impair a child's attention span and ability to learn, according to a study recently published pub-lished in Pediatrics - and available at www.tvturnoff.org. The study indicates the more television children watch between the ages of 1 and 3, the more likely they are to develop attention deficit disorder by age 7. Because of the detrimental effect too much TV can have on a child's developing mind, Valley Mental Health has coordinated this year with local schools to encourage kids to take the TV fast. This is the fourth year the organization which serves Summit, Tooele and Salt Lake Counties has been involved with TV-Turnoff Week. In Coalville, TV-Turnoff Week is mainly about spending more time with families, according to official Lyndee Valley Henrichsen. "A lot of people will go home and they don't know what to do so they'll just sit in front of the North Summit Peer Leader Micheaux Tholen, 18, said TV-Turnoff TV-Turnoff Week is "a chance for the families in the community to get together and not just sit around in their home and watch TV." She's particularly looking forward for-ward to the street dance on Saturday. "TV-Turnoff Week will be a Valley Mental Health ? official. Paul Charpentier went more than three years without aTV at home. When he finally got one, "it was harder to start watching than it was to stop," he said. When that TV broke down a year ago, he didnt replace it. TV, and that doesn't offer a lot of quality time with your family," Henrichsen said. "The benefit of ' turning off the TV is recognizing that, even in a small. community, there are activities you can participate partic-ipate in as a family." Henrichsen is also director of the student group Peer Leaders at North Summit High School in Coalville. The students planned family-focused activities for the week to provide an alternative to watching TV (See sidebar for details.) . lot of fun and I hope that everybody every-body participates and gets in the spirit of it," Tholen said, but she doesn't know if the TV purge will change her watching habits the other 51 weeks out of the year. "It depends on if I'm lazy." For those students who last the whole week without TV, North Summit teachers have volunteered vol-unteered as targets for a pie-throwing pie-throwing contest on Monday April 26. Seven-days of television abstinence absti-nence are small potatoes for one much TV as they do "because SpongeBob' a n d Nickelodeon have good cartoons." car-toons." She estim ates watching about two hours of TV per day, and is "not excited" about TV Turnoff Week. Fellow "SpongeBob SquarePants" fan Nick Dorius, 11, is a little more optimistic opti-mistic about the week-long television fast and its advantages. advan-tages. "You could get a head start on your homework home-work and book-reading book-reading projects," proj-ects," Dorius said. "I would probably . encourage (Oth ers to go outside out-side and jump graphic by kyle burress on their tramps, roller-skate; and bike." : . H Dorius, who also watches about two hours of TV per day, said, "I could probably do the TV fast, but it's going to be hard for me."
