Show SatSunMonTues, October 4-7, 2003 The Park Record A-13 DESERT JOURNAL By Chaplain (Col.) Berris 'Bear' Samples The Beatles (Tmffi) o o o When I find myself in times of trouble, Mother Mary comes to me speaking words of wisdom, let it be. And in my hour of darkness, she is standing right in front of me, speaking words of wisdom, let it be. ' -John Lennon and Paul McCartney Back in the USSR for the first time. Paul McCartney invaded Red Square in Moscow for his May 24 concert. Crazed Russians spent up to a week's pay to garner a space to watch the packed show. Tens of thousands swarmed the plaza by Lenin's Tomb as Vladimir Ilyich rolled over like Beethoven to the rocking sounds of the '60s revisited. The audience was all but square, as the Muscovites danced and sang riotously to some of their favorite tunes. Totally awesome! awe-some! Woodland Junior High in 1964 was abuzz with the' latest gossip to include word of the Beatles' assault on America and appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show. Not to be missed. Yes, their nighttime music on WLS . Radio Chicago was great. My roommate, brother Doug, and 1 would stay up late dialed in and singing along in our best under-developed tenor voices to "She Loves You" and "A Hard Day's Night.". I wasnt so sure about the Beatles. My friends wanted to grow their hair longer to imitate the Fab Four; it was un-American. un-American. Glued to our old black-and-white, we watched in amazement as Ed's audience went berserk. They were young men with a message and a medium, and captured the hearts and imaginations of a generation. I've never met a person that didnt like the Beatles. My younger brother Greg picked up the guitar and banged away at the Beatles' number one hits. He was a natural, a very special talent. Playing professionally for many years, he never broke' though the minor leagues to the big time. His handshake was like gripping grip-ping steel pliers developed from his years exercising guitar strings. At his funeral, we played "The Long and Winding Road" and "Let It Be;" no dirges were good enough, Beatles to the end. It was as if Greg sang his own goodbye. To this day, both songs haunt me and bring tears.1 Interrogated before his Red Square concert. Sir Paul spoke of always wanting to come to Russia and share his songs. Like a giddy schoolboy, he commented comment-ed that his father would be proud of his accomplishment. accomplish-ment. Little did any of the Beatles realize how their music was played on Radio Free Europe; those deadly dead-ly radio waves broke over the barriers of the communist commu-nist world like a tidal wave. As hungry as addicts, Russians would spend a half month's wage to purchase pur-chase "Abby Road." Both Glasnost instigator Mikhail Gorbachov and ex-KGB spook Vladimir Putin admitted that Beatles' songs were seditious, but they listened like everyone else. Their lust for music showed the Red weakness of mind and heart control. I wonder if . anyone ended up in the Gulag breaking . rocks for listening to "Strawberry Fields Forever?" Many recall the land mine John Lennon stepped on March 4, 1966 by stating for the British Standard that the Beatles were more popular than Jesus. Growing up in the South, I got an up-close-and-personal view of the response as radio stations and churches black- Interrogated before his Red Square concert, Sir Paul spoke of always wanting to come to Russia and share his songs. I was far from faith at the time, and my brothers and I were able to add to our collection collec-tion by getting albums at a big discount. John tried to correct and explain himself, but he remained a favorite of the KKK. Actually, he recognized how young people loved to sing and dance to their songs, and music in general reached youth in a big way. When the Russians credit the Beatles, in part, for the downfall of the Soviet system by their music touching the masses, John's statement held more truth in contemporary con-temporary times. Speaking of land mines, Paul and . Heather McCartney joined Princess Diana's movement to rid the world of the insane explosives. Paul appropriately wore a bright red 'No More Land Mines' T-shirt for the Red Square concert while Heather wore the shirt on Larry King Live. Soon after Diana's death in 1997, the International Mine Ban Treaty was signed by 122 nations effectively stopping production and trade. It is sad that existing mines are still employed in the Middle East. Particularly in Afghanistan, but also Iraq, innocent children enjoying field games meet disaster daily. It was heartwarmine to mbbbbmmh hear Paul's commitment commit-ment to donate monies from the Moscow concert to the Adopt-A-Minefield program for mine clearance, and survivor assistance, particularly with prosthetics. Heather wears a prosthetic leg after being severely injured in Yugoslavia in 1993 as she was working with refugees. In the desert, our soldiers are fully equipped with MP3 and CD players. The 'ubiquitous music is of every possible variety. To feed the need for tunes, our enterprising troops raid the PX (Post Exchange), order off the net, and swap with others. Even Radio Kuwait plays oldies. After the first Gulf War I swore I'd never go to Iraq again without a shortwave radio to reach the BBC. It is a special comfort and reminder of home to have your music tuck you into your bunk or sleeping bag at night. Brenda sent my favorite Steely Dan's Greatest along with their new CD --weird --weird not to say album anymore. Don't worry, there aren't any super amps pushing mega-woofers out vibrating our M-l tanks or Hummers! Could Western music change or influence Iraq like it did. the Soviet Union? Wouldn't money be well spent to outfit Iraqi Beatles' imitators to give free concerts? Sometimes my mind strikes on the bizarre, but who would have thunk that the Beatles would have subverted Russian politics? Maybe music can be an international language promoting peace, understanding under-standing and tolerance. After he had rocked the Kremlin, Pauf was asked how he could top this huge experience. He replied, "Next stop, the moon!? . "I'm back in.the U,S.$R. Yoii4on'f,rww how lucky. . you are boys, back in the U.S S.R. " Anything is possible possi-ble for those with big dreams who make big music. Berris Samples is a pastor at Park City Community Church.
