All funds raised go directly back into helping our community. Animal Control has received numerous calls on barking dogs recently. The ordinance is as follows: fol-lows: Barking dogs and county nuisance nui-sance ordinance: Any owner or person having charge, care, custody cus-tody or control of an animal causing a nuisance (i.e., barking, whining or howling in an excessive, exces-sive, continuous or untimely fashion) shall be in violation of ordinance and subject to its penalties. Even though your dog's barking bark-ing doesn't bother you, it does bother other people. Dogs bark for a reason a stranger's pres- i . i ence, being tangiea in a cnain, injury or anxiety about being left alone. Check on your dog; be a responsible owner and your dog will love you for it. The Summit County Animal Shelter would like to remind all dog owners of the county leash ordinance. All dogs must be leashed when hiking with' their owners. The leash law is enforced, not only for the safety of your animal, ani-mal, but for you, the owner of the dog. The Summit County Animal Shelter is located at 1745 S. Hoytsville Road in Wanship. Hours are Monday through Friday, 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.r Saturday, 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; closed Sundays. Klamath water is worth more in the river for recreational use U.S. Department of Interior has suppressed information on financial gains of recreation By JOSHUA ZAFFOS High Country News Recreation is worth a whole lot more than agriculture in the Klamath Basin, but the U.S. Department of Interior may not , want you to know that A U.S. Geological Survey study, suppressed by the Interior Department throughout October, asserts that while farming in the basin generates $100 million annually, recreation brings in almost eight times that much. The report also examines a proposed $5 billion restoration effort that would retire farmland and reduce diversions from the Trinity River, the major tributary to the Klamath. The restoration effort- could spawn a ' recreational fishery worth $41 billion, according to the Geological Survey. Watchdog groups believe the Interior Department held back the report because it contradicts the Bureau of Reclamation's decision last summer to supply water to farms, rather than leave it in the river for fish. The Bureau supplies Klamath River water to 1,400 farms and has been blamed for killing more than 30,000 salmon and steelhead trout in September. Environmentalists, tribes and fishermen on the lower river say the study shows that the water debate on the Klamath is about economic livelihood, not just the endangered fish. $"(The report) shows to the public this is not a 'farmers vs. fish' issue," says Steve Pedery of Oregon WaterWatch; "it's farmers vs. other people." Geological Survey officials deny that politics stifled the report's release, and say the study is still under review.
