After undergoing a near-six-hour vascular surgery on his leg about two-and-a-half months ago, cheerleading and watching results on TV are the closest he'll come to action for the duration of the 2002-03 FII3T World Skeleton Tour. And he loves it. "It's a nice break. I got a season sea-son ski pass, I just bought a Polaris snowmobile, I'm doing a lot of work with my foundation," Shea said, 'it's great. Right now, I love being out." Given that he can't practice, perform, or even travel at the usual breakneck pace that the World Cup skeleton season requires, Shea suddenly has plenty plen-ty of time to explore and pursue other opportunities. Like dying his hair weird colors col-ors or doing commentary for the local PCTV station. While the former never came to fruition (as skeleton buddy Martin Rettl known for his crazy multi-hued hair lost out on a bet that would have left Shea with a simi lar 'do), he was an ad hoc employee employ-ee of PCTV last Saturday, conducting con-ducting interviews with the athletes ath-letes and providing analysis of the action. Not that it was usually quite that formal. Generally, he paced around the finish area, occasionally occasion-ally watching the times unfold on a nearby TV, more often hootin' and hollerin' at the latest finisher, and then scurrying onto the ice to help carry a sled back to a storage area and loading zone. Nearly every racer who saw him took a moment to approach him, give him a high five or a hug, engage him in conversation, and obligingly grant an interview if he asked. His American teammates, in particular, made it a point to pick his brain. And after observing seven of the eight U.S. competitors land in the top 10, he had as much to say about them as he did to them, most notably about how his absence was doing little to affect the team's overall standing. "New coach Tim Nardiello has been making great results. Everyone's very, very thrilled with what he's done," Shea said. As for Saturday's results specifically. Shea added, "The men's team is in a little bit of a building stage right now. Zach Lund is trying to get into the top five, and I know Olympian Chris Soule is a little disappointed with his seventh-place finish. I know he's capable of doing a lot more, and he'll come on in the latter half of the season. As for Tristan Gale, the Oly gold medallist and Saturday's women's champion, she's just great. What can I say?" What he is saying is that while he'll eventually return to action, and he'll enjoy that too when he does, for the time being, he's perfectly per-fectly content being Citizen Shea. "I have had a fantastic time," he said. Continued from B-1 top-10. I'm just trying to set realistic realis-tic goals. So far, I've been able to meet them." He already boasts world-class start capability. He holds the track record for push time (4.60 seconds), sec-onds), and his efforts of 4.66 and 4.69 were the best on each run Saturday. However, it's the near-flawless execution throughout the rest of the race that has him behind the likes of Painand Rettl for now. While it was relatively close between the two after the first heat (49.34 to 49.61), the Canadian landed the best time of the second run, while Rettl was just fifth-best on the second go-round, enough td ensure he'd stay ahead of Japan's Kazuhiro Koshi, but also poor enough to give Pain back-to-back World Cup victories (after winning a week ago in Calgary) for the first time in his career. "Ten months ago, I couldn't push a sldd, so these results are just incredible," Pain said. "It was just two great runs, and two great events. In Calgary, I considered myself a little lucky. Here, I think T did well. Almost as well as a still-brown haired Jimmy Shea. AM iff. D D St FEATURING...
