Celebrating el Cinco de Mayo Time flies, they say... and here it is another Cinco de Mayo, and of course Park City will have a fiesta for all those who want to join us and have a good time. Before I give you some of the highlights of this celebration. celebra-tion. I want to give a little history lesson les-son to refresh your memory as to why ( 'inco de Mayo is so significant to the Mexican people and all those who have a Mexican heritage. 'Ihe lioliday of Cinco de Mayo, (the Fifth of May), celebrates the victory vic-tory of the Mexican people over the French army al the Battle of Puebla in 1862. 'Iliis holiday has its biggest celebration in the city of Puebla, the state capital. But it is also remembered remem-bered in other places, both in Mexico and in U.S. cities that have a Mexican population 'Iliis battle was fought during a very hard time for Mexico. Hie country coun-try had just gained independence from Spain in 1810 but, in the following follow-ing years, had many internal political takeovers and wars, with other countries coun-tries and the Mexican Civil War of 1858. France was under the command com-mand of Napoleon Bonaparte, and he was conquering many nations in ' Europe at the time. So Napoleon, wanted to establish his relative. Archduke Maximilian of Austria, as the ruler and Lord in Mexico. At the same time, here in the U.S.. President Abraham Lincoln was dealing with the American Civil War. and it was impossible to send any assistance. 'Hie French army invaded the Gulf of Mexico and started marching to Mexico City with an army of 6,500 well-equipped soldiers. In the meantime, mean-time, the forts of Loreto and C iuadalupe, organized and lead by the Mexican General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguin. put together a militia mili-tia of 4.500 villagers with none of the protections or weapons of the enemy, 'lliey did have a love for their land, their families, their country and their freedom. Iliis love was the key to their victory, even though they had 2.(XX) fewer soldiers Cinco de Mayo honors the brave hearts and the victory of General Zaragoza's smaller, and "poorly equipped, militia at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. This holiday is well remembered and becoming more popular along the U.S.-Mexico border and elsewhere else-where in the United States. In Puebla. the celebrations include military mili-tary parades, and students marching at their schools, paying tribute to all the civilians and soldiers who gave their lives for their country. The parades where students participate are very popular in many countries of Central and South America I hear that in tlie Penon de los Banos. they organize and put on a reenactment of the battle. Each celebration cele-bration is full of music, food, dancing and the desire to have a great time. That's what we want to have this aiming Sunday, at City Park in Park City. From noon to 4 p.m. there is going to be yummy fcxxl and music. There will also be activities for the children and sports, including soccer, basketball and volleyball. Many people peo-ple have worked very hard to organize, orga-nize, fund and put together this event. We want to say thank you to all the sponsors! Tell your friends about tomorrow's tomor-row's Cinco de Mayo Celebration -it's for everybody. Come and enjoy the spirit of brotherluxxl.
