Record guest writer "Quills," the story of a demented free spirit battling censorship and hypocrisy, is the next presentation of the Park City Film Series on Saturday, April 7. Continuing with the theme of films honored by the Oscars, the Series presents Geoffrey Rush (nominated for Best Actor this year) as the Marquis de Sade, confined to the Charenton Asylum but ' accorded the privileges of a celebrity. He has a handsome writing desk, wine, quills and ink plus an innocent young chambermaid cham-bermaid (Kate Winslet) who's willing to smuggle out his writings, writ-ings, although she repulses his advances. When de Sade's book "Justine" becomes an underground under-ground sensation, the authorities authori-ties send in a despicable doctor doc-tor (Michael Caine) who has taken a child-bride of 16 from the convent and ravished her. In other words, he's acted out the kind of sick-sex scenario sce-nario that(,tjie M,arQuis,j,s, C9P-n demned just for writing about. . 'Decade's clandestine 'writ-' 1 1 ings expose the doctor's secret. " In retaliation, his perks are taken away, until he's forced to write in wine, then blood, and then even in feces (when he's stripped naked in his cell.) The results, ultimately, are dire for the marquis, the chambermaid, cham-bermaid, and the young priest running the asylum (Joaquin Phoenix) who strains to maintain main-tain his open-minded attitude toward a man he regards as "a malcontent who can spell." Owen Gleiberman of "Entertainment Weekly" said that Rush was perfectly perverse per-verse casting in the film, noting not-ing that he plays the marquis as "a lewd and gleeful ham-bone ham-bone jester." His caveat, though, was that the film sanitized the author too much: He wrote "The De Sade we see in 'Quills" is just a giddy prankster who writes lip-smacking lip-smacking odes to the glory of women's body parts." On the other hand, Mary Dickson of "Salt Lake City Weekly" praised the film as "amusing and terrifying, grotesque and strangely beautiful... beau-tiful... "This is not a tale of erotic delights, but a provocatively hrdcabre specltacje; about one-.i man's consuming passion, for, , words and his quest for artistic freedom in the face of government govern-ment repression and religious censure." "Quills' plays on Saturday, April 7, 8 p.m., in the Jim Santy Auditorium. Park City local Kenny Griswold underwrote under-wrote the production.
