Show The Park Record B-5 Virgin Skeleton from the Virgin Islands Saturday, April 7, 2001 i . tit. : :: m by Starling Clifford OF THE RECORD STAFF Troy Billington needs money. In Park City; that isnt really news. Dozens of :non-profit organizations, organiza-tions, many of them sports related, relat-ed, need money. Especially with the Olympics just 11 months away. But Billington may be a different differ-ent story. He is raising money for the U.S. Yrgin Islands Skeleton Team, of . which he is the only member, j There are, in fact, just seven membersof the Virgin Islands Winter Olympic Team. Four in a bobsled, one luger, and Billington on a skeleton sled. "We just don'tuwant .to.be left out anymore," Billington said of the Virgin Islands first stab at the Winter Games. Billington comes from an island of 3,000. A place where people are known for what they do. Billington is known for sports. He kayaks, he sails, he teaches physical education to first through sixth graders on the island., When the Islands were first organizing a bobsled team, organizer organ-izer Gene. Sudziarski sought out Billington. He joined the team, but at a competition in 1999, he saw the skeleton. "It's the closest thing to being a super hero that you can get," Billington said. He has been trying try-ing to make it on the face-first sled ever since. Away from home for seven months now, Billington has been on seven of the 12 tracks in the world, it hasnt been easy to get there. "Every country I go to, I have to borrow a sled, I've been on 14 sleds this year," he said. "I slept in my car outside the Western Union office in Germany because I was out of gas, just waiting for the office to open;" There isnt a lot of money in the Islands, Billington has tapped out his personal finances trying to make it to the Olympics, trying to achieve his ultimate goal. "There has never been a black man to win a Winter Olympic medal, I would like to be the first," Billington said.' ccccs m oil iiifie t i;;;ri-Pcrarcccra.coni ." This season, Billington raced in the Challenge Cup, which will send its top eight racers to the Games. Of the 20 spots in the Olympics, 12 will go to the top competitors from the World Cup, a tour Billington would like to be on in future years. He is confident that with more racing he will continue to improve. "I went from being 36th in my first year of America's Cup to 17th this year. I'm as good as anyone with my push times, the experience of ; knowing'-1 -the tracks, (hat will take time," he said. "I know I'll make it." It is harder, though, with limited limit-ed funds. "The Rotary Club on my island, they have been a lot of help," Billington said. "But I have tapped out my friends and my family back home, all my resources. "The reason they help is because I'm doing what I said I would do," he added, "the results have been better than expected." So the quest to raise funds is on. Billington would like to race next year on his own sled, at a cost of nearly $3,000, it is the single sin-gle most expensive item in his budget. What little funding there is in the Virgin Islands for winter sports goes mostly to the bobsled ' team. "Nobody has ever made a movie about skeleton," Billington said. "Bobsled is more well known, more popular." In Park City, Billington has found a few helping hands. Local attorney John Fay has helped with paper work and planning, Park City Tile gave Billington a place to stay, and Zions bank has set up an account, in the name of Virgin Islands Skeleton Team, to handle the donations. Of the people back home, Billington says, "I'm sure they will help in any way they can." Of his quest to make the Olympics, "I won't stop. Not unless I die." i ; -j s f r r . f f i , ., , .. v ; v h ft s h h I Ji x h w a l - iT) n v V CHIMAYO Enjoy a romantic Spanish atmosphere while dining on award winning southwest-em southwest-em cuisine. 368 Main Street Dining begins at 5:30 - 649-6222 CISERO'S Cookin' since 1985. This last year has proven that the Internet has created a new delivery channel for real estate services. Whether a buyer is on foot or online, he or she still wants a professional guide the transaction. One third of all home buyers now use the Internet to find a home. According to an NAR (National Association of Realtors) survey, "2000 Profile for Home Buyers and Sellers", 87 of Internet home shoppers use a real estate agent or broker. Also, this year's real estate inventories have decreased in many areas prompting even more buyers to use the Internet to look for their home quickly and easily. I look forward to a new year of serving all your real estate needs. I hope you will keep me in mind if you are considering a move or have any questions regarding buying or selling real estate.
