"Best of Fest" a thank you to locals FONDUE FEST midway & RLSIAURANT r by Stephanie Howell OF THE RECORD STAFF You might notice on Monday thai Park City seems eerily quiet. It's that sudden post-festival lack of buzz. When the 2001 Sundance Film Festival officially ends the deal making will screech to a halt. Crowds will dwindle. You may even find a parking space. But for locals the show is not over. As the exhausted festivalgoers straggle coastward and near-comatose Sundance staffers pack up the Sundance offices for the big move back tu Salt Lake, two special screenings will occur. And though these screenings are unlikely to make or break anyone's film career, they do promise to provide quality movie viewing in an atmosphere sans frenzy. The "Best of the Festival" event is held each year, immediately following the Sundance Film Festival. The annual event was started in the early 1990s to thank the Park City community. The "Best of the 2001 Festival" will be held Monday, Jan. 29 at the Eccles Center for the Performing Arts. The double fea ture will include both a documentary documen-tary and a dramatic screening. At 6 p.m. an award-winning documentary documen-tary from the festival will be shown. A dramatic award winner will follow fol-low at 9 p.m. Tickets, though limited, are free of charge and are currently available at the Main Box Office in Park City (The Gateway Center) or the Salt Lake Box Office (Trolley Square). Tuesday night the "Best of the 2001 Festival" will occur in Salt Lake at Trolley Corners. The screenings will be held at 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. and may or may not feature fea-ture the same films screened in Park City the previous evening. Exactly which films locals will view will remain a mystery until Sunday morning. Once the winners have been announced at Saturday evening's awards ceremony, ceremo-ny, festival organizers will select the "Best of Festival" screenings from the pool. In the past, event attendees have been treated, to such films as "Welcome to the Dollhouse," "Smoke Signals" and "The Spitfire Grill." "We had a lot of fights," Ranon said. "Very hard ones. And we hurt each other's feelings a lot of the time." Since the students held opposing views, they' eventually eventu-ally opted to include both the Israeli and Palestinian perspectives. And though Ranon says that "Peace of Mind" was not made in order to change minds, it is clear that the student filmmakers filmmak-ers themselves have been dramatically dramati-cally affected by the experience. Jawabri explained that she used to think of Israelis as soldiers with guns who wanted to kill Palestinians. "Now when I think about Israelis," she said, "I think about my friends." Summit is evidence of indie efforts to collaborate Continued from C-1 under the banner title, "Wasatch Festival Syndicate." "The Wasatch Festival Syndicate is the beginning of something," explained Boyd. "Were not exactly sure what. Maybe we will all have our posters labeled with Wasatch Festival Syndicate" next year." If it continues forward, Wasatch Festival Syndicate may form the glue for all these independent inde-pendent festivals. "We really want to show that we are unified. Independent filmmaking is all about sharing ideas," said Boyd. "It's nice at the end of the week when we're all done doing our own things to come together again to exchange ideas. Anytime you have a room full of artists to exchange ideas, you have to take advantage of it." "The Park City experience is incredibly unique," said Shiron Bell, Digidance Event Director. "The Festival Summit is a way of giving kudos to. all of the filmmakers filmmak-ers whose work is presented in Park City, while also giving a col lective pat on the back to all of the participating festivals for helping to empower and promote independent inde-pendent moviemaking." "TromaDance is proud to be a part of this league of people's film festivals," said Lloyd Kaufman, founder of TromaDance. "We pledge to work very hard to give art back to the people." Cabot Orton of Slamdunk said, "Years ago we used to feel like a bunch of guys in a pickup truck with a rocket rock-et launcher, going up against a 55-ton 55-ton Russian tank. Now we feel like an emerging subtropical nation that's just been invited to join the UN." For Peter Baxter, Director of the Slamdance Film Festival, the Festival Summit is essentially a celebration of independent filmmakers. film-makers. "We've been in constant contact all year. New people who crop up are referred to us and we give them logistical advice about how to set up in Park City. We share equipment, we collaborate. We will continue to keep in touch after the festival and work to' organize ways to help i mcjepencfenf filmmakers throughout the year." fflJPHf J Properties UMMiaMBBi Ml Park City jgl.
