Show Saturday, January 27, 2001 The Park Record B-3 Cliff Notes Super Bowl super stars are what ii wrnnn with nrnfoQcinnal cnnrtc bv Sterlina Clifford confine your re; is by Sterling Clifford OF THE RECORD STAFF Oh my goodness the Super Bowl is here. Potato chip sales are up, utility officials in California are already taking extra aspirin, police departments nationwide are preparing for the annual increase in domestic violence reports, and 5,000 members of the media have descended on Tampa, Florida. With two very boring and very lucky teams, this year's Super Bowl looks ready to hand America the absolute minimum amount of on the field drama possible. Maybe that is why so much drama surrounding sur-rounding the big game is off the field. The Giants and the Ravens each have one name on the roster that should jump out at you, even if you confine your reading mostly to the front section of the newspaper, and bypass ESPN in favor of the Fox News Channel. Kerry Collins and Ray Lewis. One is an alcoholic who used racial slurs around teammates, and was convicted of driving under the influence. The other plead guilty to obstruction of justice after initially being charged with murder after last year's Super Bowl. Quite the pair, these two. Both claim there are extenuating circum stances surrounding their well-doc umented tribulations. Both over' came major problems in their per sonal lives, and had stand-out sea sons in the NFL. And both stand as glaring examples of what is wrong with sports in America. On Tuesday, a repentant Collins stood at a podium for nearly half an hour, answering questions from the media about the DUI that eventually eventu-ally ended his career as the quarterback quar-terback of the New Orleans Saints. His struggles with alcohol were a case of "I'll show you, I'll hurt me," he said. But he's better now, doesn't drink anymore, and didnt really mean to use the words he used around teammates in Carolina, words polite, racially sensitive sen-sitive people dont use. Collins is a stand up guy, teammates team-mates and some talking heads in the sports world now say. Sure, the most memorable image of him is storming out of a New Orleans jail, cocky look in his eye and cigar in his mouth. But he had a great year, and didn't get arrested even once. What Collins didnt do on Tuesday is apologize to the teammates he left behind, or the scores of underage under-age fans whose picture of the star quarterback now includes some antisocial behavior and playing fast and loose with other people's lives. That same Tuesday, a defiant Lewis demanded that reporters ask only about football. Sunday's game, not last year's arrest. In case you missed it, Lewis was arrested last February after he fled the scene of a double homicide outside a night club. Maintaining his innocence the entire time, Lewis eventually plead to misdemeanor obstruction of justice jus-tice in exchange for testimony against two co-defendants, who were later acquitted. At worst, Lewis participated in a double homicide. At best, he knew about it, and tried to cover for murderers. Either way, he doesn't make much of a role model. On Tuesday, Lewis said the arrest, the trial and the coverage was never about the murders. "It was about Ray Lewis, let's get Ray Lewis," he said.
