Show Wednesday, August 5, 1998 The Park Record B-3 Trail runners challenged at Deer Valley Julia Cassidy wins her fifth race of the summer by Dave Fields OF THE RECORD STAFF ''Attention female runners: If you're in a race this year with Julia Cassidy, you may be competing for second place. Cassidy was the first runner (male or female) to the top of the Mountain Challenge Trail Run course at Deer Valley Resort and was passed by only a few men on the dirt trail downhill portion of the 10-kilometer race. The 37-year-old mother of three won the race with a time of 43.17 and claimed her fifth race win of the summer, the first year she's run competitively since college. ! Salt Lake runner Reyes Aguiar picked up two minutes on Cassidy on the downhill and won the menls 10K in' 41 minutes 17 seconds. Cassidy said she was not interested in pushing it, on the downhill because "I was afraid I was going to fall." ' Park City runner Peter Wood and Karen Hoggan of Salt Lake won the 5K race, with times of 30.20 and 41.56 respectively. The 5K course started near Deer Valley Resort's Snow Park Lodge and took runners halfway up the Tour de Homes and then joined the 10K downhill course on mountain bike trails that were recently used by NORBA racers. The 10K course started at the same place and looped around the Sterling and Homesteak chair lifts then competitors ran down the old NORBA downhill trail. Fifty-nine runners entered the race that benefited the Mountain Trails Foundation. "It was a good turnout and a beautiful beau-tiful day," said race organizer Tim Henney. "It was a success because we raised money for the Mountain Trails Foundation but it was more of a success suc-cess because it's a community event." Cassidy 's summer of '98 titles include the Park City Marathon, the East Canyon Half Marathon, the 4th of July Park City Mountain Run and the Rail Trail 10K. Aguiar won the men's 10K but was not the first to the top of the hill, that honor went to Cassidy (96): the Deseret News 10K. Cassidy trains 75 miles a week with a day for speed and a day for distance but said she struggled with the fast pace of the 24th of July race in Salt Lake. "That was probably the most taxing so far," Cassidy said. The next race for Cassidy and many of the 59 Mountain Challenge competitors is the July 15 Jupiter Peak Steeplechase beginning at Park City Mountain Resort. Cassidy said the 15-mile trail run "is probably good rr ' for me." Two weeks later, Cassidy will be running in the popular Hood to Coast Relay race from Mt.
