Eriksen received the award in recognition recogni-tion of his pioneering spirit and contribution contribu-tion to the early development of the ski industry. The Pioneer Award is given only to those who members of the ISAA believe should receive special recognition. There have been fewer than six recipients of the Pioneer Award during the past 10 years. The award was presented by Deer Valley's President and General Manager Bob Wheaton and Pomerelle Resort's owner Woody Anderson. "I feel both privileged and honored to have presented Stein with this prestigious award," said Wheaton, who first met Eriksen during the late 1960's. "Stein has not only made significant contributions to Deer Valley, but to the ski industry as a whole. I feel honored to call him a colleague col-league and a friend." ISAA's Board of Directors is comprised of nine ski areas and one ski supplier representative. rep-resentative. Members meet annually and conclude ithe conference with a reception to present the Outstanding Contribution, Golden Wrench and the Pioneer Awards. Eriksen has lived in the United States for the past four decades. Prior to joining Deer Valley, he was involved in the development devel-opment of the Park City Ski Area (now Park City Mountain Resort), formerly owned by Edgar Stern, who later built Deer Valley. Before coming to Park City, Eriksen spent four years as director of skiing and ski school director at Snowmass, Colo., and four years as ski school director of Sugarbush, Vt. He has also served as ski school director and owned his own sport shop at Aspen, Colo. From 1956 to 1958, Eriksen was ski school director for Heavenly Valley, Calif., having served previously pre-viously in the same position at' Boyne Mountain, Mich., from 1954 to 1956. Eriksen attributes his skiing style to his father, who competed in the gymnastics competition in the 1912 Olympics in Norway. His young son, Stein, also trained in gymnastics which, he says, "was a great foundation for skiing because of its discipline disci-pline and the agility and flexibility it gave me." Simultaneously, Eriksen learned to ski as soon as he could walk. He attributes the COURTESY OF DEER VALLEY RESORT Stein Eriksen cross-training exercise as the factor that pushed him to the forefront of skiing competition. com-petition. After years of dedication and training, Eriksen competed in the Olympics held in Norway, and won a gold medal in the giant slalom and a silver medal in the slalom events. He then went on to win three gold medals at the World Championships in Aire, Sweden, in 1954, including the slalom, giant slalom and the combined races. At the age of 27, Eriksen felt as though he had advanced as far as he could as an amateur skier, and began to think about "life after skiing." He announced to family fami-ly and friends that he would move to the United States to pursue a career. Although he bid farewell to his native country, he vowed to return for visits, which are still occurring today. Last November, Eriksen was awarded the Knight First Class honor by His Majesty the King of Norway, as a reward for outstanding services in the interest of Norway, indicating his dedication to the home country. Deer Valley is planning to help Eriksen mark the 50th anniversary of his winning the gold in the 1952 Olympics in a ceremony to be held during the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. Eriksen calls both Deer Valley and Montana home. He spends the off-season archery hunting, playing tennis, flyfishing, fly-fishing, and participating in any other sport that strikes his fancy. He and his wife, .Francoise, have a 16-year-old son, Bjorn. He also has three other children: Stein, Jr., age 28, Julianne, age 30, and Ava, age 33. The Canyons sells-out Sundial Condominiums More than 200 Sundial Condominium reservation holders attended a Friday evening welcome party hosted by The Canyons and American Skiing Company president presi-dent and CEO Leslie B. Otten at the mid-mountain Red Pine Lodge. Two-hundred-plus people placed reservations reser-vations a couple of months ago for the opportunity to purchase a condo in the Sundial Lodge, in The Canyons' base village area. Each reservation holder had the opportunity opportu-nity to purchase up to two units. Sundial sold out 150 units in less than 13 hours on Saturday, with 139 reservation holders each purchasing purchas-ing at least one unit. Total sales amounted to $42.6 million, according accord-ing to Mike Grass, spokesman for The Canyons. The Sundial , Lodge condbs were the first significant lodging properties to be offered by the resort since American Skiing purchased it and announced expansion expan-sion plans. Marriott also plans to build and operate a vacation time-share time-share at The Canyons and each of American Skling's other resorts.
