I have noticed that you keep your advertisements running during the hard times. Many of the merchants have let them drop. Does it pay to advertise when times are hard?" asked Frank G. Carpenter in a recent interview with the great Philadelphia merchant. mer-chant. "I certainly think so," replied Mr. Wanamaker. "When the times are hard and the people are not buying is the very time that advertising adver-tising should be the heaviest. You want to get the people to see what you have to sell, and you must advertise to do that. When the times are good, they will come of their own accord. But I believe in advertising all the time. We never stop advertising." "You use the newspapers almost altogether for advertising, do you not?" "Yes; I have tried all kinds, but I think newspaper advertising is by far the best. I used to spend a great deal of money in posters and bills, but I have given up that long ago." "Can you see any immediate results from such advertising?" "I should think so," replied Mr. Wanamaker. "If you will come over here or to our New York store some morning when we have advertised a job lot of bicycles or some other things and look at the long line of people who are standing stand-ing outside waiting for the doors to open, you will see how the advertisements adver-tisements in the newspapers are read." From state exchanges On Sunday morning the whim at the Black Dragon broke and two miners, J. Anderson and Dan Neff, were dropped a distance of 200 feet. The knee cap of the former for-mer was injured and the latter's ribs were broken. Both were sent to the hospital. Southeastern Utah, which a few years ago was regarded as the last place in this vast region for a home seeker to go to, is coming out in fine shape. Fruits, grains, gold and silver are making it a famous and highly attractive district. You cant tell what changes may come over a desert when the Mormons take a hand. Deseret News 50 Years Ago Our Goddess October 28 is the birthday of a very famous American lady. As much a symbol of America as Uncle Sam, she is world renowned and is visited by half a million sightseers every year. A tribute to a goddess, the Statue of Liberty. Designed by an Alsatian sculptor, this copper figure was given by the French, at a cost to them of $250,000, to commemorate the alliance of the French and Americans who fought to win our independence in 1776. America paid $280,000 for the granite base upon which to stand this gigantic statue. In her majesty she rises 300 feet above the harbor, with the 40-foot-long right arm holding aloft the torch, clasping in her left hand the Book of Laws. A colossus, a beacon bea-con and a book. A hope and a light to wanderers, a guide in copper, to the order of democracy. Navy Day Our Navy is a lean, armed force that has helped make America a power in a world that has been arming for combat since man first learned to protect himself from his enemies. The Navy may well pride itself upon its growth, its fulfill ment ot purpose. With the United States Marine Corps, whose record is a glorious one, the Navy has succeeded suc-ceeded in its military history, in making this country secure. Its story is a success story, one we read with pride. We all pray that America will never have to face another war, but if such there is, then we may be sure this branch of the service will find no foe she cannot conquer. Honor to the men identified with it. 25 Years Ago Fast response avoids terrible tragedy in Echo Canyon Prompt response and action by State and County law enforcement officers averted a tragedy in Echo Canyon Tuesday morning. Summit County Sheriff Ron Robinson received a call Tuesday morning that a baby had been taken ill in a car in Echo Canyon. Sheriff Robinson accompanied by Utah Highway Patrolman Ken Lawton immediately went to the scene. Upon locating the car the lawmen law-men found the infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alphonso Martinez of Ogden in serious condition due to carbon monoxide poisoning. Sheriff Robinson immediately instructed the mother to administer mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. The baby girl was revived at the scene and rushed by he officers to Dr. Reed J. Parker in Coalville. She was reported in good condition. According to the officers Mrs. Martinez and her sister were taking a trip through Echo Canyon when they noticed the child was ill. They reached a phone to summon help. Patrolman Lawton issued a defective equipment warning to Mrs. Martinez for a faulty auto muffler, which almost caused a tragic trag-ic death. Depot survives runaway truck It's lucky there wasn't more damage at the Park City Depot! A runaway truck came rushing down Main Street and slammed into the corner of the building the other night just before midnight. Although it did startle Fay and Donna Dearden who live there, the damage was minimal the corner of the foundation was crumbled and inside the wainscoting was knocked off but other than that this historic landmark was not hurt. 10 Years Ago Mary Lehmer, 'Aforce in the city' Mary Condas Lehmer, politician and former city attorney for Park City died Oct. 17 of a heart attack.
