The audience got an experience experi-ence all right namely, feeling like they've been run over at ramming speed. A few old-fashioned elements (imagination, humor, plot twists) would have been nice. Kudos must be given to Sandra Bullock, who (according to press accounts) overcame a water phobia to make the picture, pic-ture, and who goes overboard trying to give the film whal personality per-sonality it has. Bullock explains early on that her Speed 1 boyfriend. Keanu Reeves, isn't around anymore because she couldn't adjust to his extreme lifestyle. (He gave her pepper spray as a gift: she thought it was perfume and wound up in the hospital.) Now she's taken aback to learn that her new beau (Jason Patric) isn't a beach cop. like she thought, but a motorcycle-riding SWAT hot dog. In order to sort out their relationship, rela-tionship, they take a cruise on "The Seabourn Legend"' but trouble soon follows, thanks to a maniacal computer whiz (Willem Dafoe) who uses his expertise to single-handedly take over the ship. After developing copper poisoning from years of fiddling with microchips. Dafoe was canned by his company. Now he seeks revenge by ripping rip-ping off a cache of diamonds on the ocean liner. (The brilliant villain never asks himself why he couldn't do the same thing without with-out hijacking an entire ship and ramming it into a Caribbean island. But as Dafoe makes clear, his eyes rolling up in his head this guv's just plain nuts!) (What the heck it would have been such a waste not to.) Head-on collision between ocean liner and island resort town. Pretty spectacular stuff, wiping out several small-craft sailors, but leaving a yappy little dog intact. Despite Bullock's top billing, the most strenuous heroics are left to Patric. who makes a serviceable ser-viceable action figure. However, there's no sparkle in his personality person-ality that would explain why Bullock is attracted to him. tras at Northwestern University and as principal conductor of the National Symphony Orchestra in Johannesburg. The black Yuppie (Glenn Plummer) whose Jaguar was expropriated by Keanu Reeves in the first film turns up again this time, to have Patric grab his expensive expen-sive speedboat for the climactic chase. Most annoying of all is Jan de Bont. who directed the original film as well as Twister, and yet makes a mistake you'd expect from a second-rate action director. direc-tor. He relentlessly uses shaky-cam shaky-cam direction and obnoxious jumpy editing to goose his action sequences. (You'd need Dramamine less on a real ocean voyage.) You'd find more entertainment entertain-ment catching a re-run of MTV's Movie Awards show, especially Mike Myers' disaster-movie spoof. The Making of "Hail"." Symphony. "We chose Utah to film this movie because of it's likeness to Alaska's landscape and it's much more economical economi-cal to bring a film crew here rather than Alaska," said Susan McDaniel, production coordinator for Marabunta. Production in Utah is " scheduled to run until June 28, with the finished film airing air-ing on Fox television sometime some-time next fall. UN NT hD 1997 United Feature Syndicate POOR |
